On hand for the celebration was Michael Montgomery (left), of Mitchell, great-grandson of Golding; and organizing committee members Bob Norris, Esther Smale and Bob Hamilton. Senator Golding died in 1961. Hibbert native son honored With S ial historical plaque 13Y ANDY BADER SSP News Staff One of Hibbert Tbwnship's native sons was honored Sunday -34 years after his death. Senator William Henry Golding was honored when his great-grandson— Michael Montgomery of Mitchell—offi- cially unveiled an historical plaque recogniz- ing his efforts to both the community and the various levels of government on which he Sen. Willi served. Henry Go Senator Golding was born and raised on Lot 15, Concession 5 of Hibbert 'Ibwnship in 1878. The fifth child of Henry Golding and Sarah Annis, he attended S.S. #3 Hibbert school. After working as a farm laborer and woodcut- ter until 1905, he trained as a machinist in Seaforth before his marriage in 1913. His life of public service began in 1916 when he was elected to Seaforth's town council, and five years later, in 1921, he was elected mayor f Seaforth where he served for eight years. He entered the volatile world of federal politics in 1932 as he won the Huron -South seat for the Liberal party (later become Huron -Perth rid- ing), and he served continual- ly until he was appointed to the Senate in 1949. He remained an active Senator until his death on Dec. 31, 1961. Major Frank Goldingt the son of Senator William Henry, gave thanks to the special committee of Bob Hamilton, Esther Smale and Bob Norris for their am !ding hard -work and persever- ence in getting this honor completed. The cost of the plaque was covered by donations from local organizations, businesses and citizens. "Father was very proud of his Hibbert roots," Major Golding told the audience, estimated at 75 people in the Staffa Township Hall. "He would have been slightly embarrassed if he were here today, but deep down he would also be proud and humbled," he said. Hibbert Reeve and Perth County Warden Walter McKenzie chaired the cer- emony, as well as giving his remarks. Also on hand to give their regards were Senator Michael Meighen, Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle, Perth -Wellington - Waterloo MP John Richardson and Seaforth Mayor Irwin Johnston. The plaque will be erect- ed at Golding's gravesite in the Staffa Cemetery. From left: Hospital CEO Bill Thibert, Hospice Chair Dr. Robert Shepherd, Helen Johns, Shirley Dinsmore - Director of Volunteer Services, Yvonne Kitchen - Chief Nursing Officer. Dr. Shepherd hopes that both the Clinton and Goderich hospitals can create office space for Hospice of Huron and eventually fink up to the computer bulletin board system being set up at the Seaforth office for the organization which deals with palliative care and support. The hospital was thanked for providing the pre- sent space, and prior space in Yvonne Kitchen's office. The volunteers were also thanked for all their help by Shirley Dinsmore. MPP Johns drew the winner, Carol Hunt, for the upcoming Fall Feast for Four. Brussels man charged for bottle bomb incidents A 20 -year-old Brussels man has been sentenced to a year in jail by Provincial Court Judge R.G.E. Hunter, who termed his behavior "rank stupidity", for bottle bomb incidents in that village. The charges against Jeremy Pasztor were laid after a public washroom was torched at the Maitland Valley Conservation Park Sept. 20, and after other incidents of setting off homemade explosives, one of which occurred during the Brussels Fall Fair with many people nearby. Crown Attorney Don Vale of Sarnia told the court bottle bombs can cause serious injury and have enough power to destroy a cement block. Retail giant opens in Goderich Wal-Mart officially opened its new 75,167 -square -foot store on Halloween in the Zehr's Plaza on Highway 8 Road in Goderich, the retail giant's 45th location in Ontario and 129th nationwide. The Goderich location will employ 110 people and include a pharmacy, McDonald's res- taurant and a lawn and garden centre. Wall -Mart Canada Inc. now has 40 per cent of the discount department store market share in this country, and employs 20,000 people.
