Leeper completed the retirement portrait in September. ft was unveiled at a private function. Leeper has painted portraits internationally, including the British Royal family. Leeper had art classes with Salvador Dali Clinton, artist paints portraits of distinction BY DAVID EMSLIE SSP News Staff While Cyril . Leeper's home and studio might be in Clinton, his reputation as a portrait artist has kept him active and away from home for good portions of this year. . Most recently, Leeper spent time at McMaster University, painting a retirement portrait of the past -president of the university, Dr. Geraldine Ken- ney -Wallace. Prior to his time in Hamilton, however, Leeper was first in British Columbia, where he painted Robert Lee, the Chan- cellor of the University of British Colurnbia (UBC), a man he said is known as "Mr. Vancouver", and Tong Loui, the head of IGA in Vancouver, and the owner of London Drugs. After those portraits, Leeper travelled to Sas- katchewan, where he painted Dr. Ted Turner, the outgoing chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan, who is also the man who founded the Wheat Pool, before beginning his work at McMaster in August. For thc portrait of Dr. Ken- ney -Wallace, the setting was an older section of the university, in thc penthouse for Con- vocation Hall; a section of the university the local artist said was "gothic". He noted, "She asked to be painted in there." The setting was not the only input the portrait subject had into Leeper's work, as he noted that she and her husband asked that stained glass windows high above Convocation Hall be placed in the background of the photo. As well, the doctor's husband, a professor at the University of Toronto, brought a large chair from the couple's home in Rosedale to the university for his wife to be seated in for the portrait. "It is part of her home," Lceper said of the inclusion of the chair. "`They wanted that wine o v, they wanted that£fiair." ....a: With her background in sciences, the past -president had another special request for thc painting. "She had me paint the formula for fibre optics on,the scroll she is holding," Leeper said. Judging by a biography provided by McMaster, the artist was not exaggerating when he said of his portrait subject, "she was incredible; very brainy. She is a very smart woman." Among the points listed on her biography are the fact she was educated in Oxford and London, and at UBC. A portion of the biography reads. "She held postdoctoral fellowships at UBC and Notre Dame (USA), joined the chemistry faculty at Yale (USA) in 1972 and moved to the University of Toronto in 1974-75. In a research career spanning over 30 years, she has investigated dynamical processes in lasers, in aerosol cloud physics, in plant membrane biophysics, and in pulsed relativistic electron beams." Also included among a long list of other achievements was the doctor being named to the National Advisory Board on Science and Technology, and the National Advisory Council of the Canadian Advanced Technology Association. She was also a member of the Premier's Council of Ontario, and was chairman of the Science Council of Canada from 1987 to 1990. "She is a very intelligent lady - you can see it in her face. She is very kind, but very authoritative," Leeper stated, noting that Dr. Kenney -Wallace was also the first woman president of McMaster. Lecper enjoyed painting in the gothic setting of Con- vocation Hall, and noted that when he was painting in the windows high above the hall, "1 was right up above. It was neat. No one knew I was there." He added that he even had the benefit of entertain- ment .while painting the win- dows, as there were concerts and plays going on in the hall while he worked on painting the windows. Proud to be a Poopini Local artist illustrates her eighth book An illustrator who was raised in Seaforth has just had her eighth book published. Chum McLeod now lives and works in Barrie. • Her latest work is included in a book with a circus theme called Proud To Be A Poopini, written by London author Dave Sindrey and put out by Napoleon Publishing in Toron- to. "McLeod brings her own special magic and unique style to this colourful cast of charac- ters under the big top," the publishers note. "Ilenry and the Cow Council sees 'no need now' for new Bluewater plan The Bluewater Recycling Association plans to collect both waste and recyclables, in a program it terms "the first of its kind in Ontario", beginning next April. At its Oct. 10 meeting, Seaforth Council agreed it did not want "to say no outright" and wants to keep informed of the association's plans, but it sees "no need now" for co - collection in this municipality. Coun. Michael Hak noted Seaforth has two contractors now collecting garbage, the proposed program doesn't involve a tendering process and it would "not be fair to ratepayers". Problem, which she first il- lustrated for Annick as a small Annikin, proved to be so popular that it was released last year in large format with new illustrations by Chum," the press release continues. "Another example of her beautiful work for children can be found in the anthology of poems by Nelson called There Will Always Be A Sky." She has worked as an il- lustrator since graduating from the Ontario College of Art. Her work has also appeared on book covers, magazines and textbooks. It's Never Too Early to Plan for Retirement! Leeper noted that he learned the formulas for different schools of painting while in his fourth year at the Academy of Rome. He travelled to Europe to study after high school, and following his four years in Rome, he also studied for a year in Madrid, at the San Fernando Academy. He said that while in Madrid, one of his instructors for five sessidns was Salvador Dali. In his current portrait work, as was the case with Dr. Ken- neytaWallace, Leeper paints life size, as did Rembrandt. He related a story of visiting the Metropolitan in New York City, and measuring the head of a Rembrandt portrait, to see if it was really life size. The life size retirement portrait of Dr. Kenney -Wallace, Leeper said, was unveiled at a private function for McMaster staff.
