TULIPMEISTERS - Students at St. Columban School spent lass Thursday morning planting a Celtic cross made of tulips
their teacher won for writing an essay.
Class plants Spring extravaganza
Then it should help herald an
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL end to the drab monotony of
Expositor Staff another winter with a
cacophony of colour in purple,
red, white and yellow for
passers=by on Highway 8.
Brown won the bulbs for an
essay she wrote for Canadian
Living magazine, celebrating
the 50th anniversary of the
liberation of the Netherlands.
The short piece noted how
the Irish in the St. Columban
area sponsored many of the
Dutch people who settled here
after World War 1I. She was
notified she was one of the
about 200 winners from across
Canada about a month ago.
She won 100 bulbs in each of
You couldn't have picked a
nicer morning than last
Thursday to plant tulips.
This, plus the fact they were
free, made Mary Brown and
her Grade 6 and 7 class at St.
Columban School seem doubly
blessed under the sunny skies
while putting 400 Dutch bulbs
in the ground and enjoying the
unseasonably warm
temperatures.
You will have to wait until
next spring to see the Celtic
cross they fashioned for the
front lawn by the school.

the four colours, then figured
her good fortune would make
an equally good class project
by teaching students some of
the old-fashioned basics of
botany while they also made a
personal statement about the
history of their own little
comer of this country.
The Celtic cross design is a
natural for anyone of Irish
Catholic descent. The bulbs, of
course, will speak for them-
selves next spring but also
stand for the Dutch strains in
St. Columban's heritage. •

was a big help. He cut the sod
beforehand, donated the topsoil,
organized the colours into four
groups of students, helped the
youngsters string -out the design
then told them how to tell
which way is up when it comes
to tulip bulbs.
