The Huron Expositor, 1995-10-11, Page 11STAHLKE SATELLITE SYSTEMS Close-up Crocheting a rewarding hobby, daily activity BY DAVID SCO.1I' — • Expositor Editor Crocheting has been a con- stant companion for many years to • Mary Robertson. The Sbaforth resident learned the craft in her teens from family members. "My mother started me to crochet. Both of my grand- mothers crocheted and some of illy aunts," she said. Robertson, who admits is "up in my -eighties," keeps to her handiwork even though she has arthritis in both hands. "1 Lind it helps with that." She has created her own designs over the years for doilies and tablecloths. The tools of her trade, a crochet hook and endless rolls of size 30 crochet cotton, are conveni- ently store(. inside the footstool she uses while relaxing in her chair and working on her daily hobby. Why a hobby that consumes many so hours in a week? "You have something to show for your work. And I still have more to - do," says Robertson. Her John St. apartment is adorned with her creations. Most of the projects she works on are Christmas, birthday or wedding gifts for family and friends. One year she made 24 crocheted crafts that she gave away, She has 10 great- grandchildren, six boys and four girls. Even the boys enjoy receiving her craft work. "The oldest boy is in univer- sity. He loves it (crocheted gifts). He says: `that's for my future home. "' Robertson . has no plans to turn her hobby into a business though. "It takes about 20 hours to crochet a doily. What would I charge? One dollar an hour? You wouldn't want to pay 520 for a doily." BUSY HANDS - (Above) Mary Robertson works away on her favourite hobby - crocheting. (Below) She displays just a few of the elaborate doilies she's made over the years. "I still like to do craft work. It's a good pastime. It's wonderful." Each doily is composed of many smaller components, each of which is delicately designed by Robertson. Some contain 36 smaller parts which are then joined together and a border is added to the outside. Some- times it takes up to two weeks just to complete a single doily. Although Robertson knows how to knit, she prefers the relaxing pace of a crochet hook to the constant motion of knit- ting needles. She also finds her handiwork more forgiving. "You can cover mistakes easily," she said. She crocheted a few tablecloths in the 1980s and '90s, one of which took eight months to complete. But her hobby is a daily event. Robertson says she crochets about three hours every day, although not all in one sitting. She enjoys relaxing in front of the television while working on a project. And every night she plays cards with friends, a pastime she learned in public school. "No wonder I don't have any time for housework," she jokes. "But," she adds, "I don't cro- chet on Sundays." "I still like to do craft work. It's a good pastime. It's won- derful." GREGOR CAMPBELL PHUIO PROUD TO THE CORE - Kindergarten students from St. James Roman Catholic School in Seaforth took a tour of the Andreassi Orchards on Louisa Street in Seaforth last Thursday morning.
