The Huron Expositor, 1995-10-11, Page 10to 10 -THS HURON EXPOSITOR, October 11, 111115 GREGOR CAMPBELL PHOTOS VOLLEYBALL ACTION - Seaforth District High School's boys' volleyball teams took on Exeter South Huron in town here last Thursday. The first two senior games were dandies - with undefeated Exeter taking the first 16-14, but Seaforth the second by an identical score. The rubber game was no contest with South Huron winning 15-0. Exeter swept the junior games 15-3, 15-2 and 15-4. Local runners top field Seaforth and arca runners set the pace in two &visions at the fifth -annual Patrick Cook Memorial Cross Country Meet for elementary schools at Strat- ford last Tuesday. Bradley Henderson of RR 1 Seaforth won the boy's eight - and -under event and Danny Sharpe of Egmondville crossed the finish line first in the boy's 9 -and -10 race. Both are students at St. James School in Seaforth. In the girls' 13 -and -over race Kim Devereaux of Seaforth finished in third place. The cross country was held at St. Michael Secondary School. Cents get point but lose game they should have Veteran forward, Christien Criel glided unmarked into the high slot, took a pass from Steve Hudson from the corner, then drilled the winning goal with 1:13 left in overtime at Lucan Wednesday as the Irish 6 won their home opener with a 5-4 decision over the Seaforth Centenaires. The overtime loss leaves the Cents with three points after their first three games in the Ontario Hockey Association's Junior "D"evelopment League. Holes - Eleven -year-old Mark Flanagan of Church Street in Seaforth was the youngest golfer to record a hole -in -one at the Seafort:l Golf and Country Club this season. He used a five iron to ace the 140 - yard 15th hole on July 24. Eight aces have been recorded so far this golfing season at the local links, four of them at the 10th hole, three at the 15th and another at the 16th. They host Burford Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Seaforth and District Community Centres, and travel to St. George Satur- day night for a 7:30 start. The Irish ended Seaforth's season at Lucan last spring and unpleasant lingering memories faded early as the Centenaires built up a 2-0 lead by the 8:55 mark of the first period on goals by captain Jason Dun- seith and rookie J.C. Kirk. On the subsequent shift Seaforth came within a whisker of • in -one The record of aces reads like so: • Carolanne Doig, May 6, #15, par 3, 122 yards. • Paul Selvey, May 23, #10, par 3, 103 yards. • John Caldwell, June 15, #10. • Ken Doig Sr., June 16, #15, liar 3, 140 yards. • Mark Flanagan, July 24, #15. • Norm McLean, Aug. 5, #10. • Barry Noakes, Aug. 21, #10. • Larry Dudgeon, Sept. 8, #16, par 3, 161 yards. Muir gets scholarship - The granddaughter of Jack and Marie Muir of Jarvis Street in Seaforth has earned a com- bined athletic and academic scholarship at Mercer State University in Macon, Georgia, about 90 minutes south of Atlanta. Tracy Muir, 19, will play both fastball and volleyball for Mercer. She is the daughter of Mary and Danny Muir of Strat- ford, who is well-known in the Seaforth sports scene. Tracy was chosen top athlete at Stratford St. Michael Secon- dary School and was the Strat- ford Minor Sports Council's athlete of the year. She played catcher and first bast for Maryhill and the Kitchener -Waterloo Civitans last summer. She chose Mercer over Rut- gers (New Jersey), Kent State (Ohio) and the University of California at Berkley. "Mercer is a small school and it's Division I," says Muir, "and I can get a degree in education which will be valid in Canada. And third, 1 can play volleyball there. "My coach in minor ball, Brad Horton (of the Stratford Minor Girls Softball As- sociation) taught me everything I know," she adds. "He was my coach for nine of my 12 years." She also credited her teachers at St. Mikes. making it a three -goal lead but missed two "cans of corn" within seconds of each other. The momentum seemed to shift, Lucan came on stronger with a flurry of shots and tied it up by the end of the first period. The teams exchanged goals in the second period, with newcomer Dwight Gingerich scoring for Seaforth, so remained deadlocked entering the third. A shorthanded goal by Mike Robb took some more wind out of the Cents' sails, but Dunseith's second goal of the game on a nifty "spinerama" and low blast from the point on the powerplay, with eight -and -a half minutes left in regulation time pepped up play, earned the point and sent the game into OT. On more than one occasion in the game all five Seaforth skaters seemed to run around like heads with their chickens cut off in their own end of the rink. This is what beat them in the end. Nobody picked up Criel all alone in the middle one-on-one with a hard low shot. The Irish out -shot Seaforth 41-30. The diminutive Gingerich, a rookie forward who played with former Centenaires Jamie and Chad Ramer and Steve Geiger while rising through the ranks of in the Zurich minor system, played a strong game, setting up Kirk with some hustle then a terrific pass on won Seaforth's second goal. The Centenaires have now also signed two 17-year-olds from the Seaforth minor sys- tem, on their request - defen- ceman Brent Hulley and for- ward Jason Smith.
