Include fire extinguishers
in your family's safety plan
Fire extinguishers should be
included in your family's fire
safety plan to help prevent
small • fires from spreading.
Most domestic fires occur in
the kitchen, and, according to
fire prevention officers, more
than 70 per cent can be
controlled by a fire
extinguisher.
'For maximum safety, homes
should be equipped with fire
extinguishers,' says Jim Hind,
general manager of BRK
Brands Canada, makers of First
Alert products. 'They should be
a part of every family's fire
safety plan, along with smoke
alarms and an escape plan. Fire
extinguishers save lives and
decrease property damage.'
'Some people think that fire
extinguishers are intimidating,
but in fact they are very easy
to use and maintain.'
According to the Ontario Fire
Marshal, in 1992, 96 deaths
occurred and more than $160
million worth of property was
lost in residential fires in whiclf
no fire extinguisher was used.
This compares to three deaths
and a loss of $6 million in fires
in which a home fire
extinguisher was used.
HOW TO USE A FIRE
EXTINGUISHER ,
*Install extinguishers in the
kitchen, basement and garage,
and on every floor of your
home, in plain view. They
should be near the exit, but
convenient to fire hazards.
Every camper, cottage and car
should also be equipped with a
fire extinguisher.
*Fire extinguisher maintenance
is essential. For rechargeable

units, check the pressure gauge
every month to ensure the unit
is holding its charge.
Disposable units can be tested
by simply pushing down the
pressure test button.
*In most eases, if there is a
fire get your family out of the
house first, and call the fire
department. However, if the
fire is small, and limited to a
contained arca such as a stove
top or garbage bin, use your
fire extinguisher.
*For oven or stove fires, turn
off the heat as soon as
possible. Do not attempt to
move the hot or burning pan.
For electrical fires, unplug the
appliance or shut off the power
as soon as possible.
*Stand back from the fire,
especially a grease fire (which
can splatter) and aim the
extinguisher nozzle at the base
of the fire, squeeze the handle,
and sweep from side to side.
Move closer as you spray.
*If the fire docs not go out
right away, get out of the

house and call the fire
department.
*After using a rechargeable -
type extinguisher, no matter
how much extinguishing agent
has been used, consider the
unit empty and have it refilled
as soon as possible.
*You can remove fire
extinguisher' stains on clothes
with a paste of dry starch and
water. Let the paste sit for
awhile.
First Alert fire extinguishers
are available in several models,
to suit every need: kitchen,
garage/workshop, general
household, heavy 'duty,
commercial and auto.
Ensure that you match the
extinguisher to the type of fire.
Residential fire extinguishers
fall into three main classes:
ordinary combustibles (Class
A), flammable liquids (Class
13) and energized electrical
equipment (Class C). The label
on the fire extinguisher will tell
you which type of fire it is
intended for. Many household
fire extinguishers arc multi-
purpose, and are labelled for all
three types of fires.
Fire extinguisher maintenance
is essential. For rechargeable
units, check the pressure gauge
every month to ensure the unit
is holding its charge.
Disposable units can be tested
by simply pushing down the
pressure test button. After
using a rechargeable type
extinguisher, no matter how
much extinguishing agent has
been useda consider the unit
empty and have it refilled as
soon as possible.
