Local youths develop leadership skills
'Positive and motivated' was
the feeling that the over-
whelming majority of dele-
gates at the first annual 'Pride
of Huron Leadership Cainp for
Rural and Urban Youth' left
with as they departed camp.
The young people, ranging in
age from 15 to 19. had just
spent a weekend discovering
untapped leadership qualities
within themselves.
The retreat was held on the
beautiful shores of Lake
Huron at Camp Kintail, north
of Goderich from Friday, Sept.
8 to Sunday, Sept.10. The del-
egates took part in several
leadership sessions focusing
on effective meeting proce-
dures, shared leadership, goal -
setting and self-awareness.
Highlights of the camp
included a vibrant discussion
on the qualities that create a
great leader. The entertaining
piece on rural economics and
starting a small business pre-
sented by guest speaker Pam
Stanley was a key portion of
the camp for several delegates.
The goal of the camp was to
create a unique environment
for delegates to explore lead-
ership possibilities and take
risks while rnaintaining a fun
atmosphere. According to sur-
veys after the camp, the lead-
ership sessions were made
enjoyable by the facilitators'
very 'up' style of presentation,
emphasizing the positive and
building through the bonds
created by group interaction.
Intermixed throughout the
weekend were many periods
of recreation which help create
a team -building mood.
The hulk of the planning was
done by Huron County Junior
Farmers; an organization dedi-
cated to the development of
young leaders through self-
help and community better-
ment. This camp only scratch-
es the surface of the programs
that are available to rural and
urban youth
through Junior Farmers at both -
the county and provincial lev-
'els. The youths present at the
camp came from all over
Huron County, from rural
areas as well as from various
towns and villages. Some
knew each other and some
didn't; but by Sunday evening
they were one solid group of
friends.
