Jim Wideman, executive director of M.A.D.D. Canada, addressed the meeting of approximately forty people, explaining that M.A.D.D. is a group of men and women of all ages dedicated to changing current attitudes and laws regarding the violent crime of impaired driving through education and involvement at both the community and government levels and, very significantly, to the support of the victims of drunk drivers. Wideman spoke of his family's loss of a teenage son to the thoughtless, criminal act of a drunk driver eleven years ago and urged all present to take the action necessary to prevent future needless tragedies, perhaps involving their own loved ones. Paul Steckle, Huron -Bruce MP, spoke to the issue as well, stating that many more citizens are victims of drunk drivers than are victims of crimes involving firearms. Steckle expressed concern that much more effort and resources are being focused on gun control measures than on the entirely preventable crime of drunk driving. He also spoke of the need for the kind of support for victims of drunk drivers which only M.A.D.D. seems to be able and willing to provide in these times of government cutbacks. Wideman had earlier pointed out that M.A.D.D. receives insignificant funding from government sources, depending entirely on individual and corporate donations and active fundraising such as the Red Ribbon Campaign for its financial resources. It is hoped that Prime Minister Jean Cretien will 'kick off' the Red Ribbon Campaign in November 1995 as he did last year. People attended the meeting from many parts of the area but those from the Wingham/Lucknow/Teeswater area predominated. The executive and board hope that those from other areas such as Walkerton, Kincardine, and Goderich will choose to become involved and promote M.A.D.D.'s efforts and activities in these and other communities. Barb Rintoul and Lynne Magee spoke of the needless, violent deaths of their sons, Kevin and Patrick, at the hands of a drunk driver last summer and personally urged all attending to become part of the solution to the problem. They spoke of targeting the school children and teenage students as the start of a change in attitude and behaviour with respect to alcohol and the operation of motor vehicles, pointing out that M.A.D.D. will send proven, effective programs into the schools, industrial safety programs, service clubs, and other community groups as part of their education and awareness function. They also stressed the importance of the example provided in the home. The executive chosen is a follows: President, Lynne Magee, Wingham; Vice President, David Magee, Wingham; Treasurer, Barb Rintoul, Whitechurch; Secretary, Sylvia Cameron, Wingham. Other board members nominated and confirmed are Sandra Lee, Point Clark; Archie Purdon, Whitechurch; Colleen Schenk, Wingham; Dianne Simpson, Wingham; and Dr. Stewart Anderson, Whitechurh. •CORN •SOYB NS ACRON, HARUS AND FUNDULEA SEED WHEATS AVAILABLE WE ARE READY TO RECEIVE YOUR 1995 Corn and Soybeans Three Receiving Harvest Pits Services available Hill ANO Hill FARMS LIMITED VARNA ONT.
