Hockey players move up ladder
Seaforth's reputation as a
hockey hotbed was once again
enhanced last week as the local
junior Centenaires approved the
release of four players to area
junior B clubs in time for the
start of their seasons on the
• weekend.
Steve Geiger, 18, of Zurich
was released to the London
Nationals. The two-year
veteran was the -Centenaires'
most valuable player last
season. Jason Murray, 18, of
the Walton area was released
to the St. Marys Lincolns.
Mike Lauwaert, 16, of Strat-
ford has gone to the Listowel
Cyclones.
Mark Van Dooren, .17, of
Seaforth has been signed by
the defending OHA Junior B
champion Stratford Cullitons.
Geiger, Murray and Lauwaert
were all on Seaforth junior
cards last season. Van Dooren
was on a minor card, but under
OHA regulations local junior
teams must also approve
releases to other junior clubs.
He didn't waste any time
starting his season with a bang.
Van Dooren scored twice for
the Cullitons, who opened their
season with a win over Osh-
wegan Friday night.
The Cullitons and Cyclones
play in the Midwestern Junior
B League, while the Lincolns
and Nationals play in the
Western League.
Seaforth ice rates approved
The commercial rate
decreased and ice rental fees
for minor sports continue to be
subsidized in the structure of
1995-96 rates approved at the
August meeting of the Seaforth
and District Community
Centres Management Commit-
tee.
A base ice rate of $82.50 per
hour including GST was ap-
proved, up $1.50 from last
year's rate of $81.
Minor sports was given a 520
reduction off the hourly base,
or $62.50 per hour for 1995-
96. -
Community Centres Manager
Graham Nesbitt reported minor
hockey was charged 75 per
cent of the base rate last year,
and uses about 2,200 hours of
ice yearly.
An new off -hour basic ice
rate of $62.50 was established,
or $42.50 for minor sports. The
respective rates were $56.70
and $40.50 last season.
The new commercial rate
went down, and was set at
$92.50, or $10 an hour over
the basic hourly rate. Last
year's commercial rate was
$93.15, the rental charged for
such things as hockey, goalie,
figure skating and ringette
schools.
A motion to establish the
new commercial rate at 590 per
hour was defeated.
The management committee
determined the new rates will
be in effect from Sept. 5, 1995
to July 31, 1996.

Bingo won't publish statement
Seaforth's Minor Sports
Council doesn't think it is a
good idea to have its bingo
financial statement published in
the paper annually.
At a past Seaforth Council
meeting Deputy -Reeve WiWam
Teall suggested that the minor
sports council publish such a
statement so the public knows
how much money is raised and
where it goes. The municipality
Weed.
the minor sports council
doesn't. No official reason was
given, although the or-
ganization says anyone reques-
ting the statement could receive
one.

Cents down Barons in
penalty -filled contest
A big lead can be a mixed
blessing.
The Centenaires learned this
Friday night at the Seaforth
and District Community
Centres, coasting to an 8-5
exhibition junior hockey win
over the Hanover Barons of the
Western Junior C League.
The two teams were tied 3-3
after the first period • but
Seaforth scored three
unanswered goals in the second
then increased their lead to 8-3
midway through the final
period before the visitors lit the
lamp again.
Scraps and stoppages seemed
to increase the more out of
reach the Seaforth lead became.
The game ended up no classic.
It took just under three hours
to play, and referee J.P. Zubec
had his hands full as the penal-
ties required two game sheets.
The Centenaires get back to
their own league for their next
exhibition, this Saturday night
at 8:30 p.m. when they host the
Thamesford Trojans, defending
champions of the Ontario
Hockey Association's Junior
"D"evelopment League.
An exhibition game against
the Braves originally scheduled
for Tavistock tonight (Wedne-
sday) was postponed because
the ice isn't ready in Tavistock.
The Centenaires beat them 9-
2 when they met two weeks
ago in Thamesford.
Veteran Tim Barton tallied
twice for the Ccntenaires, with
single goals also scored by
Brent Hulley, Steve Mclnally,
Committee talks
of second ice pad
A sub -committee studying the
pros and cons of a second ice
pad reported "a potential of an
approximately . 55 hours of
usages" at last month's meeting
of the Seaforth and District
Community Centres
Management Committee.
Estimated usage is 30 hours
for various groups that now use
arena ice and 25 hours for the
curling club, said Paul Vander-
Molen.
"The architect has advised
approximately S1.5 -million to
put up a second ice pad
complete with change rooms
and a lounge," his report to the
management committee con-
tinued. "This would be built on
the west side of the present
arena.
Andrew Scou, Jason Dunseith,
Shaun Anstett, and Jason
Smith.
Cory Schmidt of Stratford
played the first half of the
game in the Seaforth net and
gave up three goals, and Scott
Wood of Seaforth played the
last half surrendering two
more.
Seaforth now has a pair of
wins and a loss this pre -season.
The Cents open their regular
season at home Sept. 29 when
they host the powerful Port
Stanley Lakers.
