Who says
newspapers, com-
munity or otherwise,
only print bad news?
The Huron Ex-
positor is pleased to
report after last
week's scoop of the
week on eight pup-
pies recently aban-
doned at the Seaforth
Veterinary Clinic that
seven of the liner
were spoken for. by
shortly after noon
hour the following
day.
The eighth pup had
health problems the
local vet clinic
wanted to make sure
were solved before
making it available
for adoption.
One caller thought
we were too negative.
"Sorry, just the
facts, `ma'am'."
We kind of had a
gut feeling our
readers in "The
Friendly Town" and
surrounding
townships would take
care of the rest.
They did.
Tails will wag.
Thanks!

NEW LEGION SIGN ERECTED - Pat Schellenberger, President of the Legion Branch 156
Ladies' Auxiliary and John Lansink, President of Branch 156, stand in front of the new sign
which was officially unveiled and dedicated on Sunday afternoon. The Ladies' Auxiliary
raised the money for the sign which was erected in time for the Homecoming weekend. The
sign coincides with the 50th anniversary of the end of World War Il. The unveiling ceremony
took place on the first day of Legion Week.
McKillop sets property standards
McKillop Township passed a
property standards bylaw when
its council met Sept. 4. The
new bylaw sets standards and
was passed in response to
complaints the township has
received in the past about junk
and debris affecting the ap-
pearance of various properties.

Dan Lambert, part Lot 30,
Conc. 1, attended the Sept. 4
regular meeting and expressed
concerns about dust control in
McKillop.
Councillors supported a
resolution from Ashfield
Township urging Huron County
"to approve a thorough
evaluation to of all alternatives
to its landfill site." McKillop
also went further, asking the
county to further explore the
services of Blucwater
Recycling to reduce landfill
waste and its costs.
Clerk Marion- McClure notes
there has been at least one
instance in McKillop of refuse
being picked up by a truck and
persons unknown. Garbage
piracy is a growing and more
widespread problem in On-
tario's larger urban centres,
where market prices for such
things as recycled newsprint
and cardboard make it attrac-
tive.
McKillop feels the county
hasn't fully explored
Bluewater's services as a way
of reducing landfill waste and
its costs.

A joint agreement was
authorized by McKillop
Township with the Seaforth
and District Community
Centres.
Council also gave the go-
ahead to the Winthrop Com-
munity Centre Committee to
apply for a beer and liquor
license for a ball tournament,
Sept. 15-16.
Council endorsed some
resolutions from other
municipalities, and another
from the Ontario Federation of
Anglers and Hunters objecting
to the provincial government's
proposed gun control legis-
lation, Bill C 68.
A resolution from the town
of Roxborough "that the
government of Ontario ensure
school boards not be permitted
to download their budget
shortfalls onto municipalities".
and another from Carnarvon
Township asking the Ontario
Ministry of Health to
implement sections of the Scott
Report dealing with fee-for-
service in rural hospitals, were
also endorsed.
Town will hire crossing guards
Seaforth is going to take
charge of crossing guards when
the town switches to OPP
contract service sometime next
month.
Provincial police have advised
the finance and general
government committee they
will train and fill-in if a cros-
sing guard is unable to work,
but they will not be in charge
of crossing guards on a daily
basis as the Seaforth Police
Force is now.
The committee agreed the
town will take over the hiring
and supervision of crossing
guards.
Seaforth's finance and
general government committee
is trying to cut costs by using
the photocopier less. It has
agreed to provide a synopsis of
committee and Council cor-
respondence, but that in future
not all correspondence will be
photocopied but remain
available in the Council cham-
bers for viewing at meetings.
•••
One parking spot on Main
Street has been authorized for
police only in front of the new
OPP station, just north of
Town Hall. Provincial police
asked for two.
Seaforth's finance and
General government committee
has also been advised the OPP
telephone system that has been
called a Panther
is not a system Bell
Canada sells or repairs.
Bell has advised the commit-
tee, according to its Sept. 5
minutes, "that if there is a
problem at the OPP station,
Bell will ask that they be as-
suted there is nothing wrong
with the Panther system before
they 1ivi11 came out to inves-
tigate their lines."

If the local Optimist Club
folds, Seaforth may have to
officially run Optimist park and
its booth, which the town's
recreation department is now
actually doing anyway.
Administrator Jim Crocker
advised last Tuesday's Council
meeting that the Seaforth Op-
timist Club continues to be
down to six members, and that
if a planned membership blitz
doesn't change the club's for-
tunes Council may haveto
address the situation by the
middle of October.
Tax arrears are improving in
Seaforth. To date 60.3 per cent
of the last fiscal year's arrears
have been collected, or $85,087
of the January 1 total of
$141,156. This compares to
64.6 per cent for the same
period last year at this time, or
$121,842.
