HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1995-09-20, Page 5Legion sign dedicated Last Sunday afternoon the dedication of the new sign at Seaforth Branch 156 of the Royal Canadian Legion took place. Colour Sgt. Mel Melanson marched on the colours. President John Lansink welcomed everyone and explained the sign is in remembrance of those who died. and also those who served, in World War II on the 50th anniversary of it. Mayor Irwin Johnston brought greetings from the town and congratulated the Legion on the sign and the good work done in the past. Deputy Zone Commander Cl Olave Little brought greetings from the Ladies' Auxiliaries of Cl. President L.A. Pat Schellenberger and Past President L.A. Ann Wood also spoke. Major (Rt) Padre Frank Golding led a prayer of remembrance and dedicated the sign: Our three golf teams participated in the provincial golf tourney in Chatham over the weekend. Congratulations to our senior team which came in third in Ontario. I also hear that they don't play 'cards as well as they golf, as their wives beat them. There is a two -ball foursome tourney scheduled for Sept. 24 at Seaforth. If you are planning to play in this, please sign up on the board as soon as possible. Linda Gridzak, sports officer, has posted all information on up -coming sports on the board. Please read them and sign up for those you are interested in. The Zone Cl Convention will be held at Branch 156 on Oct. 1. The parade will be at 1 p.m. and the convention starts at 2 p.m. A meal will be available at 5 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend this meeting. Last week members of the auxiliary went to Stratford to visit our oldest member on her birthday. Congratulations to Mrs. Edith Dunlop on her 101st Birthday. Greetings were received from Command and Mike Harris, Premier of Ontario. Our general meeting will be held on Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. At this time I would like to express my thanks to Tim Cumming for all the help and co-operation he has given me and the Branch for the last four years and to wish him well in his future endeavors. We will miss you Tim, Good -luck. At thegoing down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. Hicknells hold reunion Forty descendants of the late Peter and Matilda Hicknell family gathered at the home of Francis and Marie Hicknell in McKillop on Saturday for a family reunion. The afternoon was spent visiting for the adults and playing games for the children. The day ended with a pot luck supper. Gerry and Karen Ryan, Jason, Amanda, and Jeremy and Cecilia Ryan attended a pork roast at the home of John, Mary Jo and Zachary Nelson, RR 1 Lucknow on Saturday. About 100 friends and relatives of the Nelson's had an enjoyable day. Sympathy of the community isextended to Mary Coyne, a St. Columban by Cecilia Ryan ;a,-�uzx by Cecilia Ryan 345-2U2<8 resident at the Seaforth Manor, on the death of her husband, Lewis Coyne, on Friday at the Seaforth Community Hospital. Sympathy is also extended to his family, grandchildren, his sister, Sister Rita Coyne of St. Columban, and all of his • relatives. Mass of the Christian Burial was held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Seaforth. Joe Eckert enjoyed visits from Keith and Rita Kelly, Stratford; Reiny and Shirley Van Loon, Holland Landing; and, Fred and Betty Eckert of Cambridge. Seaforth and District Horticultural Club Meeting was held on Wcd. Sept. 13 with an 'interested crowd. The club was delighted to have as guests George and Alice Herbert from Stratford who showed us a commentary slide show of the Swiss Alps. New arrivals are always good news! Meet the teacher night Walton Public School held its 'meet the teacher night' last week starting off with hot dogs and refreshments. On view was the proposed plan for the addition of a general purpose room on the school. The teachers enjoyed meeting many Walton -area families. Children spent time showing their parents their classrooms. Friday was the Terry Fox run at the school and all children and teachers participated. Money raised for the event will go to the Brussels Cancer Fund. Balloons outside the Walton Hall beckoned eighteen children inside on Friday after school. The occasion was Nicholas and James Durrell's birthday party. The group enjoyed party games and helped the two brothers eat up the 'gummy bear' birthday cake. Doug and Marjory Fraser were greeters at Duff's United on Sept. 17. Sarah McDonald started the service off by lighting the Christ Candle. After the Call to Worship and the singing of 'Joyful Joyful', Rev. Randy Banks announced that there will no service at Duff's next Sunday due to Walton by Patty Banks ` 887-6860 Blucvale holding their Anniversary service. Their service will start at 11:00 with guest speaker Rev. Bonnie Cole Arnat. Everyone is invited to attend. Oct. 1 is World Wide Communion and Oct. 8 is Baptism Sunday. JoAnn McDonald came forward to read the Board Minutes. Patty Banks announced that the Sunday School pupils have a prayer wall downstairs and if anyone wished to add either their names or names of other people in need of prayer to let the children or teachers know. Rev. Banks called the children forward and asked if any of them had ever done anything wrong. Several hands went up. He then asked them how they knew it was wrong. Rev. Banks named four or five things that some people do that is wrong and then went on to say that it was called 'sin'.
