Standoff continues at Ipperwash
By Patrick Raft's
SSP News Staff
The situation at Ipperwash
remained tense but stable
Monday night, as a standoff
between police and a native
group occupying Ipperwash
Provincial Park continued.
Tate occupation of the park;
which natives are claiming is a
sacred burial ground, began
September 4, after the park had
closed for the season. The situ-
ation turned confrontational
September 6, when Anthony
(Dudley) George, 38, one of
the occupiers was killed by
gunfire in a confrontation with
OPP on Army Camp Road,
Wednesday night. Police
report they fired on a bus,
which exited from the camp
pushing a dumpster which was
part of a barricade, after occu-
pants of the bus fired at them.
Natives contend they are
unarmed and that police shots
were the only shots fired. The
Ministry of the Attorney
General is conducting an
investigation into the shooting.
Native leaders vowed to con-
duct their own probe at a press
conference held at the Camp
Ipperwash, Thursday evening.
Two other native people were
injured in the incident which
occurred between 10 and 11
p.m. Both were taken into
police custody after release
from hospital.
Perth, Huron
health unit
amalgamation
being discussed
The second of a series of
scheduled discussions on
potential health unit
amalgamation between the
Huron and Perth Boards of
Health occurred Sept. 8. A
draft framework for ongoing
discussions was developed
encompassing the topics of
financial and administrative
issues and political structures.
The next meeting is scheduled
for Oct, 27. '
up from the camp entrance on
Army Camp Road to a point
about 500 yards south on
Highway 21 for about half an
hour as natives, mostly from
the nearby Kettle and Stony
Point Reserve, arrived to pay
their respects.
Following the shooting, OPP
had blocked off all acct -ss
roads into the area around the
camp, park and nearby reserve,
as aboriginal people set up
their own barricades, in one
case using a flaming vehicle
crudely painted to resemble an
OPP cruiser inside the police
perimeter.
The situation eased consider-
ably by noon on Friday, after
Ovide Mercredi, Chief of the
National Assembly of First
Nations, who arrived in the
area Thursday evening, joined
local native leaders in negotiat-
ing with police. Under an
agreement negotiated between
OPP officials and native lead-
ers, the'OPP took down their
barricades and replaced them
with "observation points,"
while natives used heavy
machinery to clear debris used
to create their barricades off
Highway 21. •
"We're still maintaining
observation points and moni-
toring traffic at about a four
kilometre perimeter around the
camp," said Grand Bend OPP
Constable J. J. Arseneau,
Monday afternoon.
Gas in local
communities
The Londesborough, Brus-
sels, Blyth and Belgrave areas
will all soon have gas.
Line construction along the
highways is ahead of schedule
because of the good, dry
weather, says the project co-
ordinator for Union Gas.
The company estimates 100
customers had signed for con-
nection in the Clinton to
Belgrave and Brussels triangle,
and another 100 for the Win-
gham to Teeswater area.
However, native police offi-
cers from Kettle Point and
other reserves across the
province.have been called in to
police the arca immediately
around the camp.
Meanwhile, natives have for-
tified the main camp entrances
with sandbags and blocked
other entrances with vehicles.
Considerable damage was
done inside the park as natives
Funeral services for George
" were held without incident at
Camp Ipperwash Monday
morning, despite a huge crowd
of native mourners from the
immediate area and across the
province. Some 'natives even
travelled from south of the
border to attend George's bur-
ial in a plot on the former mili-
tary base. Traffic was backed
used picnic tables and other
fixtures around the park to bar-
ricade entrances. Also last
week, the park administration
building was burned to the
ground.
No official word has been
issued by the federal govern-
ment, which pledged to return
Camp Ipperwash to native con-
trol in its first budget in
February, 1993, but it has been
widely reported that Indian
Affairs Minister Bon Irwin
will arrive to join negotiations
Wednesday.
