Walsh wins Seaforth invitational
A four -under -par 66 gave
Brad Walsh his fourth Men's
Invitational title at the Seaforth
Golf and Country Club Satur-
day.
The accomplished veteran of
area links from Stratford, who
is a teacher and moving to
Egmondville in a couple of
weeks, finished four strokes
ahead of a trio tied for second
at par 70 in the twenty-third
renewal of the' event, the
largest regular tournament of
the season at the local course.
They were Randy Binkley of
Hanover, Rick Fifield of St.
Marys and Paul Herbrand of of
London.
Right behind in the 180 -
player field was Seaforth's own
Chris Marion, 17, with a year
of junior eligibility left, who
fired a one -over 71, good
enough for a tie for fifth.
Bill Dale of Seaforth had the
best low net score in the field,
scoring a 64.
A large contingent from
Bermuda, as usual, this time
made up of 10 golfers, attender
the annual international tour-
nament. The field also included
players from Florida, Ottawa,
the State of Delaware, many
from Toronto and about 50
from Seaforth and area. Joe
Lindo's gross score of 78 was
the best of the Bermudian
contingent.
Ken Doig Sr. scored a 65 to
win fust flight low net
honours, followed by Herb
Cowan and Jerry Wright of
Seaforth.
Once again Velma Miller of
Seaforth catered the tour-
nament, for the twenty-third
consecutive time.
Other local Saturday scores
of interest include:

Seaforth-area golfer wins junior event
Clinton's Dave Hiltz has had
a summer he won't soon forget
in his final season of junior
golf.
The 18 -year-old, who has
worked for the past several
seasons at the Seaforth Golf
and Country Club, shot a three -
under par 67 to win the recent
Junior Invitational at those
same local links.
The outcome wasn't decided
until the 18th hole though,
where co-worker Chris Marion
of Seaforth double-bogied to
finish three strokes back at par.
Hiltz, who earlier last month
finished a respectable 24th in a
field of 150 at the Canadian
Junior Golf Championships at
St. John, New Brunswick, will
be too old to be eligible for
junior next year but hopes to
earn a golf scholarship
David Hiltz
somewhere in the United
States. He's had about 15
letters from interested schools.
The greens were "quick" with
"deceptive" slopes at the big -
league Riverside course that
overlooks the Bay of Fundy a'
St. John, Hiltz said, after car-
ding rounds of 75, 79, 79 and
78 for a total of 311, 22 shots
back of the winner.
"It was playing hard," he
said. "There were a lot of good
first rounds and I didn't think
my result would be that good."
Hiltz is in his final year of
high school at Clinton. He was
in hospital with colitis this past
weekend.
He qualified for the national
championship at the provincial
event earlier this summer, after
topping the field at the regional
qualifying tournament where
Marion, 17, finished second.
He also qualified for the
Canadian Junior but didn't go.
Hiltz has golfed com-
petitively for the past sic
seasons. Prior to this summer
he says his most satisfying
finish in a big tournament was
19th in the 1994 Ontario Junior
at Barrie.
Pro pitcher replies to letter
Sports editor's note: The Boston Red Sox of
baseball's professional American League have a
rookie pitcher with the moniker Tim VanEgmond.
Expositor fan and baseball "groupie" Dave Scott
called editor Tim Cumming, on a slow and sunny day
not so long ago, and wondered out loud whether this
VanEgmond might in any way be related to the Van
Egmonds who founded the village of Egmondville,
just up the road, a question we expect many baseball
fans might have also asked. So our Tim tracked
down the address of the Bosox and fired off a tetter.
It turns out the Red Sox chucker calls Sharpsburg,
Georgia home. Last week the following reply arrived,
complete with rookie card:
Dear Mr Cumming,
It is very strange to see my name in print not to
mention a town named after it. Here's the story but it
might not be what you expect. My father's name was
John VanEgmond. He and my mom split up when I was
very young. He never contacted me and I'M sure he had
his reasons. I heard that the last place he was supposed
to be was Ottawa, Canada. Strange huh, so I'm probably
related to the others. I don't really know why 1 kept the
name but I did and I like it. I'm happy to see that the
name is fairly prominent. I have no information on the
VanEgmond name if you could send me some I would
be delighted. My mom never really mentioned my dad
and I never really asked. I don't even know if I would
like to know. If you happen to know him tell him...Hi,
and that what happened was a long time ago.
Anyway that's how I got the name, as well as my little
brother Joey. He is 23. I've enclosed a baseball card if
you would like one.
Sincerely,
Tim VanEgmond

And you can bet the

Meanwhile, the Centenaires
play their third pre -season
game at Seaforth this Friday
night at 8:30 p.m., when they
host the perennially powerful
Hanover Barons of the Western
Junior C League.
"1 think ` maybe we caught
them with their pants down,"
Centenaires co-head coach
Dave Murray said after Friday
night's occasionally awesome
offensive display from the
Seaforth side. Both he and
counterpart Jim Campbell were
particularly impressed with the
Cents' powerplay for so early
in the season. It connected six
times.
The Trojans have been to the
OHA final five of the last six
seasons,' and won all of the
marbles four of those years.
Friday night's exhibition was
the first time Seaforth coaches
have mixed veterans, rookies
and prospects in their roster.
Eight veterans did not play for
one reason or another, it being
frosh week at most colleges
and universities.

Seaforth outshot the Trojans
43-31.
Troy Chessell of Stratford
played a credible first half of
the game in the Seaforth net,
especially for someone who
had never played more than
major bantam. Midget -aged
goalie Scott Wood of Seaforth
finished, playing an aggressive
style that allowed not a single
puck past him.
Thamesford scored first and
the two teams were tied 2-2
after the first period. The Cen-
tenaires scored four
unanswered goals in the second
20 minutes of play.
Dylan Wick, Jeff Volland,
J.C. Kirk, Jason Smith and
Andrew Scott also scored for
the Centenaires.
