CWL celebrates 75 years in Canada The Catholic Women's League is celebrating 75 years in Canada this year. Members of local CWL organizations held a spe- cial anniversary cere- money at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church on Aug. 2. The following arti- cle, submitted by the local CWL groups, provides his- tory on the organizations early history. *** The Catholic Women's League originated in England in 1906. Miss Margaret Fletcher inaugu- rated a National . Organization for Catholic women to develop reli- gious and intellectual inter- ests. Word spread of the orga- nization across the Atlantic. In 1920, a Loyola Club in Montreal became a Catholic Women's League Club and was the founding club. The World War I "had energized and united women as never before." The motto of the CWL is "For God and Canada." Our lady of Good Counsel is the Patron of CWL. Annually, dues are collected and remitted to the national office, provin- cial office and diocesan office. Monies collected from these dues are used to educate and to lobby the various level of govern- ment on moral issues which erode family life. The CWL tries to shape society rather than be shaped by it and we begin in the parish councils. At the parish level, we also provide the service of a luncheon after funerals.
