NEW DOCTOR WELCOMED - Dr. Ken Rodney welcomed Seaforth's newest doctor, Dr.
Alan Kosaric, at the Seaforth Medical Clinic this week. Dr. Kosaric became full-time in
Seaforth as of Sept. 1. There are now six doctors at the clinic. The London native says he
enjoys the closeness of acute and out-patient care with the hospital and clinic so close. The
graduate in family medicine says he enjoys both emergency work and seeing patients.
Literacy group centred in Bruce

One of 20 regional literacy
networks in the province will
be operating out of Walkerton.
The Queen's Bush Initiatives
for Literacy and Learning
(QUILL) Network, one of the
largest geographic areas in the
province, officially opened the
first week of September in
conjunction with International
Literacy Day on Sept. 8.
"The importance of the net-
work is that we'll hopefully
lighten the load of literacy
providers. We'll be able to
offer the services which had
been taking time away from
the delivery of providers' pro-
grams," said Cindy Davidson,
one of two project coordina-
tors.
The network, funded by the
Ontario Training and
Adjustment Board (OTAB),
will serve literacy needs in the
Georgian Triangle, Grey,
Bruce, Huron and Perth coun-
ties. The network provides free
training events, an information
Hotline, referral services, a
quarterly newsletter, network-
ing opportunities for literacy
providers and a resource col-
lection.
QUILL existed as Literacy
South Central network until a
recent change in geographic
boundaries.
"To reflect the new geo-
graphic area, we decided to
change our name and structure
a bit," said Davidson.
"We're hoping to broaden
our services a bit and expand

province to axe
retirement
gratutities
Perth County Board of
Education trustees think
retirement gratuities for
teachers are an idea whose
time has gone.
They voted unanimously last
Wednesday to send letter to the
Ontario government asking
they be phased out.
Long-term disability plans
and pensions now do what
"expensive" retirement
gratuities once did, they feel.
Teachers are alloted 20 sick
days each year, which they can
accumulate up to a total of 240
in their careers. They may
claim up to a maximum of 50
per cent of their final year's
salary as a retirement gratuity.
The Perth board estimates it
will pay about S1 -million in
gratuities this year.
