Natives seize Ipperwash park
North Lambton OPP were
taking a wait and see approach
Tuesday morning, after a group
of between 25 and 40 natives
walked on to Ipperwash Prov-
incial Park and claimed control
of the camp.
Sergeant Doug Babbit of the
Forest OPP said Tuesday
morning that police had set up
three check points at the camp
and there had been no further
incidents since the group
walked onto the camp, which
had closed for the season after
campers left for the holiday
weekend, about 7:30 a.m. Mon-
day night.
At that time there was a
'verbal confrontation' between
police and the native group and
a police cruiser window was,
smashed, said Babbit. There is
no indication the native group
is armed, said Babbit.
OPP and Ministry of Natural
Resources representatives
entered the park and "told them
they were trespassing and
asked them to leave."
Babbit said the group made
no demands and offered no
explanation for their action.
"They just said they weren't
leaving."
