McLlwain wants to help
Continued from page 1.
"You hate to blame injury
but.,.obviously I'm behind the
8 -ball, not necessarily written
off, but I ' have to go into
training camp and show it was
an injury that slowed me down
and when I'm healthy I can
play with the best of them in
the league."
Time will tell, perhaps in the
next six weeks. If management
has already "closed the book"
on him, McLlwain feels he
may be made available to the
waiver draft.
"I actually want to stay in
Ottawa," he says. "You go
through the rough points and
you can sort of see a light at
the end of the tunnel - with a
young team that is starting to
jell a bit. It would be fun to be
part of that team that can win
hockey games."
They were a long way from
the playoffs but Ottawa's for-
tunes improved in their final
dozen games last year. Dave's
game was on the upswing too,
playing on a line that seemed
to have the right chemistry,
with Troy Mallete and Scott
Levins. The trio clicked and
the Senators won five of their
final seven games.
"I felt I could play another
30 games and hockey was fun
for us again," McLlwain says.
Though the team lost about a
dozen one -goal decisions last
time around, Dave knows that's
not what people will see when
they peruse the stats in the
history books.
The bottom line is the
Senators must start winning
more hockey games, or more
heads than Dave's will roll.
"We have to," he says. "A
new rink is coming into Ottawa
and we have to fill that rink.
They are not going to come
and watch a team that is
playing way under .500 hock-
ey. „
McLlwain says all those
talented young legs that started
to jell for the Senators at the
end of last season, and with
important off-season additions
such as Steve Duchesne, Ot-
tawa is capable of playing .500
hockey at home right now, and
should now attempt the next
logical challenge on the climb
to respectability - also winning
as many games as they lose on
the road. •
HOCKEY SCHOOL
Dave's now annual hockey
school ended here in Seaforth
Last Friday, before summer's
last long weekend.
Enrolment was down this
year but he says it continues to
be "great working with the kids
and instructors...and it's
definitely something I want to
continue."
Competition is also fierce
these days in the hockey school
business. When the local
school started it had a large
area to draw from and its only
competition was in London, but
'since then similar schools have
sprung up in Kincardine, St.
Marys and Stratford. En-
rollments are down across the
board for many established
schools, McLlwain says:
"I think it's survival of the
finest. If you can sell your
product and show that the kids
learn something and have a
little fun you can be successful.
Maybe everybody's a bit finan-
cially strapped these days"
That's something Dave isn't,
Being an eight-year NHL
veteran has its perks. It's a life
most young males in this
country would trade their souls
for at some point in their
Saturday morning hockey
dreams.
McLlwain has played for the
Penguins, Winnipeg, New York
Islanders, Buffalo, Toronto
Maple Leafs and Senators.
"We all sometimes struggle
at different jobs," McLlwain
says. "I've enjoyed it 100 per
cent. Sure there are low spots...
"I think what I went through
when I was traded a few times
there in one year made me
mentally stronger. It made me
realize just what the game is
all about.
"It's not just - go out and
play. There is the, politics part
of it. It is a big business now
and different teams move guys
for different reasons.
"I wouldn't trade it for the
world. I've enjoyed it. I pick
up things every .day. I just
don't know what I would do
without hockey in my life.
"I try to act as normal as I
can, like the average person
from Seaforth. I just like to fit
in and be a person from a
small town.
"And they can never take that
part away from you."

EAGER TO GET AT IT -

Cents in annual
rookie game
The Brussels Bulls put an
end to a tradition of "sister -
kissers" by beating the Seaforth
Centenaires 10-6 in their first
exhibition game of the junior
hockey season Friday, their
now annual Rookie Game.
The past two such games
between the two area teams,
who play in different Ontario
Hockey Association leagues,
ended in draws. -
It was the first time in five
exhibition games over the last
three seasons the Centenaires
have lost to a Western Junior C
League opponent.
Seaforth dominated the
opening 22 minutes of the
game, leading 4-2 after the first
period, but the Bulls then
found some intensity and
dominated the well-auended
game at the Seaforth and
District Community Centres.
Both benches experimented
freely, as the new coaches on
both teams evaluated prospec-
tive players for the upcoming
season. Every player in the
Seaforth lineup was a rookie.
Jason Heipel of Clinton had a
hat trick for the Bulls, whose
other goals were scored by
Aaron Barrie, Shawn Walsh,
Josh Fisk, Steve Henderson,
