HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1995-09-06, Page 3Historic plow at There is an old plow now sitting on the fence that surrounds the Seaforth fairgrounds, by the new Agricul- tural Building. The antique, horse-drawn walking plow has seen some furrows in its day and is about as old as Confederation. It has wooden grips and steel handles, and was hand - forged in an Egmondville shop circa 1867 by John Gray. He moved to this arca from nearby Rogerville in 1860. fairgrounds site The same plow first saw action on display at a plowing match in Hurpurhey in 1864, about the time of the Fathers of Confederation were politically forging the Charlottetown Accord, which soon led to British North American Union. The plow is now perched on the fence to be displayed in perpetuity, a donation to the Seaforth Agricultural Society from the collection of Harold Coleman of John Street, a local historical plow enthusiast. Perth holds Harvest Day Tour event "A tremendous day in the country" is how Perth County Agri -Tours bills its second - annual Harvest Day Tour of Perth County, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 1. The route will remain a mystery until passports, tour maps and information on par- ticipating farms and agri- businesses arc picked up after 10 a.m. that morning at one of three locations: the original Stratford mall, the new Zellers mall in Listowel or Staffens in Mitchell. Farms include a beef operation, a dairy farms, a farm featuring Barbados Blackbelly sheep and Angora Goats, an apple farm plus a farm equip- ment dealership and the Strat- ford Perth Museum.
