I went to bank, circus broke out HEALTH ON THE HILL
Have you ever walked down-
town lately?
I have.
The other day I took a walk
through downtown Wainfleet
only to discover there was
none. It might be the only town
in Canada in which humans are
in the minority.
So I went to the downtown
core of nearby Port Colborne
to try and figure out what's
wrong with the economy.
You may have noticed that
retail sales in Canada have
been rather sluggish ever since
federal and provincial tax
departments adopted a policy in
the late 60s to take the earned
income of the average Cana-
dian, run it through a maze of
percentage points, then keep it.
(In fairness, although they do
confiscate our money, they've
been more than generous in
making sure our credit card
limits are as high as any coun-
try in the world.) -
But when I came across the
Welland Nutrition Centre
located in downtown Port
Colborne- I realized we had a
bit of a retail problem on our
hands.
I know, the location manager
could use a compass. But
besides being in the wrong
town, the Welland Nutrition
Centre was selling "Large
Size" ladies' dresses out on the
street. Now my question is, if
the nutrition products are work-
ing why would the ladies need
large size dresses? (Unless, of
course,. the dresses were cast
off...sorry...used clothing of the
store's clients who are now all
size 7's and spandexed to the -
hilt. Then it's a great endorse-
; menta)
I was a little confused. Then
I started taking a closer look at
some other downtown estab-
lishments at which point I got
a lot confused.
Tie Pink, next to the nutrition
centre sells..;flashy neckwear?
Not a chance. They sell Chi-
nese food.
No, if you want to buy cloth-
ing you of course go to the
Beer Store. For a complete
line of shirts, jackets and caps,
the Beer Store is like a small
town's GAP.
At the post office, on Fri-
days, I can buy a barbecued
sausage and a cold drink. If
however, I get a notice in my
rural route mailbox to pick up
a parcel you would think I
would take that notice to the
post office. No, of course not.
I take that notice to retrieve my
parcel at...wait for
it...Shopper's Drug Mart.
Shopper's will also develop
and sell me film, but the good
people at Niagara Photo assure

And next door to Shopper's

$45.96 they would sell me -

lot of pop and chips? Every

Two cartons of cigarettes?
No, no, and no. For $45.96
I can buy a bus ticket to
Toronto and back.
No, if you want cigarettes, go
to the Sunoco gas station
across the street. They're
$2.69 a pack.
And if you like a little caf-

Matheson's Drug Store has a

Presently I'm getting my
chain saw serviced at Ryder
Truck Rental, I buy my T-
shirts at Port Whole Pantry, the
Belmont Hotel provides me
with humour, I bought my last
TV set at the A & P grocery
store, and I get most of my gas
from the pickled sausage at the
Canadian Legion.
And I'm not making a word
of this stuff up!!!
The problem with the Cana-
dian economy is that the few
consumer's who do have
money to spend are standing
around on ‘street corners won-
dering if they should buy their
furniture at Premi's Barber
Shop or Donut 68 and if they
overextend themselves, will
Tuck'o Jewellers give them a
loan?
Yesterday I went to see my
friends at the Niagara Credit
Union and a carnival broke out
in the parking lot. I swear, 1
dropped by to do some banking
and I was entertained by a
clown, dazzled by a juggler,
soaked by a fish tank and
given a free hot dog and pop.
They. had everything but large
ladies casting off clothing.
This, so completely confused
me I developed a migraine
headache. Fortunately,
Domino's Pizza was open so I
was able to stop on the way
home and buy some Tylenol 2.
