Hockey players
hold reunion
More than 50 former hockey
Players, including record -mak-
ing hockey coach Ron Mason,
met at the Seaforth Golf and
Country Club on Saturday for
a special reunion.
Some of the former hockey
players had played on the
Ontario championship team. A
Seaforth team won three Inter-
mediate 'B' championships in
a row, an Ontario record.
Ron Mason, now a successful
university hockey coach,
recalled playing in 1949 in the
old rink.
He left the Seaforth area to
play in Peterborough in 1956.
He went to St. Lawrence Co1-
lege out east.
He has coached for 28 years,
including Lake Superior State
in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
and Bowling Green, Ohio.
He has been at Michigan
State coaching for 16 years.
Mason said the reunion is a
great idea because without it he
wouldn't have the same com-
pelling reason to come back
home.
"It's great to be back here,"
said Mason at Saturday's reun-
ion. "You walk in and you
know just about everybody."
One of the more colourful
hockey players to attend
Saturday's reunion was Ralph
former
import from Stratford who
returned to Seaforth to live
about four years ago.
"I haven't seen these guys for
30 or 40 years," said
McFadden. "If we put them on
skates, and took away 30 years,
we could beat anybody."
McFadden earned the name
'Farmer' when he was growing
up in Stratford and was derided
as just a farm kid. His first pair
of skates were ladies' skates.
He soon proved himself quite a
hockey player. That's what
brought him to Seaforth.
He left the area at one time
for a successful coaching
career. He coached the Junior
'B' team in Burlington, which
was a farm team for the Detroit
Red \Vings. He also coached a
Jr. 'A' team in Hamrk, I. He
also ,Adciee efereein his
hockey talents.
Ralph's son Bruce, himself a
former Seaforth hockey player
and Junior referee, also
attended the get-together as
part of the Homecoming week-
end.
Another person attending the
hockey reunion was Dalton
Shine, a Monkton-area import
who played around, 1952-53.
He called the Seaforth team a
gutsy, little hockey club that
never gave up.
TWO ACES IN GOLF - Bill MacLean and his father Norman
can now both claim to have hit holes in one...on the same
hole at the same golf course.
Family `aces' 30 years apart
More than thirty years ago
the first person to make a hole -
in -one at Seaforth Golf and
Country Club was a 14 -year-
old named Bill MacLean.
Last week, on August 5, Bill
saw someone make a hole -in -
one on the same hole on the
same course. This time, it was
his father Norman MacLean,
76, who scored the ace.
When Bill made his hole -in -
one about 32 years ago he was
golfing with his father and with
Rod Doig. On Saturday, it was
Norman and Bill golfing
together again when the second
ace was made.
"His was a better shot than
mine," insists Norman's son
Bill.
