Ontario championships at local links
The best young golfers in this
province are competing for The
Ellis Trophy here in Seaforth at
the Ontario Junior Girls'
Championship. Tuesday through
Thursday.
It is the first time the 69 -
year -old, 54 -hole championship
has been held at the Seaforth
Golf & Country Club. .
Four of last year's, top five
finishers . are in the 57 -player
field, including the defending
champion . Andrea Lavelle
from the Sunningdale and
Highland clubs in London.
She was 14 for last year's
tournament at Dundee near
Kitchener. But that didn't stop
her from finishing with a score
of 236, . four strokes up on
second -place finisher Rebecca
Sargeant from Couchiching.
The runner-up is also entered
in this week's championships
at Seaforth, as are last year's
third and fourth -place finishers,
Theresa McDermott of Cherry
Downs Golf and Country Club
(243) and Tamra Jones of
Idylwylde (244).
Cheryl Tooshkenig, who shot
a 235 to win the annual Les
Thomas London and District
junior championship by an
almost unbelievable 18 strokes
at Thames Valley last week,
must also be considered a front
runner. She hails from Wal-
laceburg and plays out of Echo
Valley in Sarnia.
One of the youngest golfers
in this year's field is from
Huron County, 12 -year-old
Lindsay McEwin from the
Bayfield area. She lists
Bluewater as her home club
but has also taken lessons here
at the Seaforth club. Two bud-
ding Kincardine golfers are
also playing - Joline Bell and
Catherine McLeod from that
Bruce County•community.
The four low scorers from
this week's stroke -play com-
petition will make the Ontario
inter -provincial team represen-
-
ting the province at the
Canadian Junior Ladies' Cham-
pionship to be played at Loret-
teville, Quebec from August 7
through 10.
Regional team play also is an
important competitive aspect of
the competition.
The Ontario junior match -
play squad will also be deter-
mined at the tournament, as
will the members of this year's
team for Ontario/Quebec junior
matches.
Junior golfers become
ineligible for this level of com-
petition the day they turn 19.
The juvenile girls' champion-
ship, for those not yet 16 years
of age, will also be settled.
If there are playoffs they will
be sudden -death.
Donna Teasdale is in charge
of public relations for the On-
tario Ladies' Golf Association
at this week's tournament. She
says the junior girls' champion-
ship often doesn't draw well
unless it is near a big city, so
is hoping many area enthusiasts
show up for this week's play.
Admission and parking are
free.
She adds many have gone on
to further fame and fortune
after successful Ontario junior
golf careers, for instance Barb
Bunkowsky currently on the
LPGA tour and Marlene Streit;
The latter is the only woman
amateur golfer to have won the
Canadian, United States,
British and Australian Amateur
championships.
The Seaforth club is a par -71,
5301 -yard course.
LINDSAY MCEWIN
An `up-and-comer'.
Lindsay McEwin of RR 1
Bayfield had a birthday last
month, June 19 to be exact.
At 12 -years -old she may be
the youngest golfer in the field
at this week's Ontario Junior
Girls' Championship at the
Seaforth Golf and Country
Club.
She is the daughter of Brenda
and Lee Kirkwood,. both gol-
fers.
'This will be the first tour-
nament for Lindsay this season,
and in recent weeks she has
been golfing about three rounds
a week in preperation.
Last year she finished first,
by about a dozen strokes, at the
Bluewater junior tournament
and she has been golfing for
about two years.
"I'm going to do the best I

Beaned local lad
real golfing `gamer'
Chris Marion had quite the
headache early Monday. The
17 -year-old Seaforth golfer was
buried off the back of the head
by an errant golf ball Sunday
and spent the night in hospital.
But he's "a gamer" and was
off with six others to the Op-
timist Junior Golf Tournament
at Doon Valley the following
day.
Marion and David Hiltz are
packing an impressive one-two
punch in arca junior golf this
summer.
Yesterday (Tuesday) they
were off to compete in the
three-day Ontario Junior Golf
Championships at Listowel.
Hiltz, 18, topped the 50 -
player field by shooting a 75 at
the' regional qualifying tour-
nament at New Dundee two
weeks ago Monday. Marion
finished second, one stroke
back at 76.
Both boys have been golfing
since they were about five
years old, and both have
worked at the Seaforth Golf
and Country Club for the past
several summers.
Marion lives on Victoria
Street in Seaforth and Hiltz
lives in Clinton.
Last week Hiliz came char-
ging with a final round 72, for
a throe -round score of 226 to
finish in a three-way tic for
second place, two off the pace,
at the Les Thomas London and
Distric( junior golf champion-
ship at Thames Valley.
Entering the final day's play,
Marion was one shot behind
the co -leaders, in a group tied
tor third at the tournament, but
it was not his day and his score
ballooned to finish eighth.
There are about 150 golfers
shooting for top spot at this
week's Ontario Junior in Lis-
towel.
Five other juniors from the
Seaforth club were at Mon-
day's tournament at Doon
Valley. The others - were
Keegan Teichert, Mark Phil-
lips, Ryan Willis, Kyle Hender-
son and Derek Nesbitt.
