VALEDICTORY ADDRESS
BY MARYANNE HAYTER
HURON CENTENNIAL
Good Evening,
Before I begin, I would tike
to thank my fellow graduates
for honouring me with the
position of valedictorian. I only
hope I can express your true
feelings.
Staff members, parents,
relatives, friends, and of course
fellow graduates, tonight we
are saying goodbye. Goodbye
to public school, the teachers
here, being at the top of the
heap, and we are saying good-
bye to each other.
Soon we must say hello to
new beginnings, like high
school, whether it be in
Clinton, Seaforth, Exeter,
Stratford, or London. We.must
make some new friends and
compete with new challenges.
From the beginning of our
years here at Huron Centennial
we have learned many things.
Since the first time we said
goodbye to parents, to now,
when the teachers (lucky for -
them) get to say goodbye to us.
Kindergarten brought us the
basics we would use for the
rest of our lives, the A, B, C's,
and the 1, 2, 3s. Also
Storybook Gardens and our
visit to the hospital took place
in Kindergarten.
Grades one and two were
spent reading, printing, count-
ing and with our buddy
readers. We also went on many
nature hikes during those years.
Grade three was the time
must of us started learning our
second language, for a lot of us
this language was French. This
was also the year all of the
grade three students took
swimming lessons. Gee, I
wonder if Mr. Marsh has
passed yellow yet?

Maryanne Hayter
In grade four 1 always felt
like I was being treated like a
little kid. I wanted to be treated
as a mature student. I soon
found out in grade five that
with maturity comes home-
work.
The year that was spent with
Mrs. Thomas ` and . Mrs.
Westlake went well. We
studied The Secret Garden and
Medieval limes. That was the
year we went to the Goderich
Museum anti The Historical
Jail.
Grade Seven was very differ-
ent academically. Mrs.
Ryckman teaching us the scien-
tific method, and music with
Mrs. Cooper. Rotary was so
much better than staying in the
same class all of the time.
And thenia'ter.several years
of anticipation' we finally made
it to grade eight. I think it took
a while for it to actually sink
in that we were the "big" kids
of the school.
Though we had a year full of
trials and triumphs Mr. Laye,
Mrs. Lockwood, Mrs. Cooper,
and Mr. Payne, not to mention
Mr. Jewitt and Mr. Black have
all tried . to put .up with us.
Thank you all.
Our visit to Twelfth Night in
the fall, along with the ever -so -
long -awaited -for Grade Eight
Ilk were both very unique. I
believe one of the favourite
stops, in.. the Detroit/Windsor
area, for some people was the
baseball game and for others it
was Studebakers. I also believe
some students had the best
time at the residence, although
at lights out some people found
it very hard to leave their dorm
rooms considering all the
nighthawks were staring at my
door, Oh I mean the students'
doors.
Now tonight can you believe
that we've actually made it to
graduation?
Through the years students
have come and gone from
Huron Centennial, but hope-
fully they all felt accepted.
Yes, we do have our own little
groups of close friends, but
really we are all friends here.
As we move on into the
future we will eventually all go
our separate ways. Darcy will
be the chiropractor, Anthony
the artist, perhaps Pam will go
far in Varsity cheerleading, eh
Pam? Ryan Nicholson will be
the professional ball player,
Lucia will be a great wrestler,
considering she's great at hit-
ting herself. Leanne Keys,
Wendy, Becky and I will per-
haps start a hot,dog business.
No matter where any of you go
in life remember to follow your
dreams and believe in yourself.
On behalf of all the graduates
here tonight I would like to
thank.. some very special.
people. First of all it is import-
ant that we thank your parents
who have been with us since
day one. From changing our
diapers, to helping us with
homework, to guiding us
through really tough times.
You have taught us morals and
you love us. Though we may
not always say it we love you.
too. Thanks Mom and Day.
Also our Mom away from
home, June Cooper. Thank you
-very . much for the hugs,
guidance, and the special talks
(not to mention all the scrapes
and cuts you bandaged up).
I would also like to thank
everyone who put so much
time and effort into making
this graduation so beautiful and
special.
To the graduates, I would
like,to read you a poem which
conveys my wishes for you.
Keep This day forever,
Someplace deep inside
• your heart,
This happy, hopeful,
golden day
When you will see the start
Of all the dreams you cherish -
Never let their wonder fade,
Keep the expectation
And the shining goals
you've made,
Keep the precious memories -
And, all along life's way,
Keep the joy and the promise
of this Graduation Day!
As we leave here tonight, I
ask you graduates, to follow
your dreams and don't ever let
anyone stand in your way,
because you can make anything
happen if you believe in your-
selves.
Please do not to forget the
memories we've made there.
The good times and the laugh-
ter, for someday we will look
back and say, "Yes thosewere
the good old days." -
Congratulations and may God
bless you all.
