Briefly- Hospital votes. to become smoke-free Seaforth Community Hospital is becoming smoke-free as of August' 1. The Board of Directors made the decision after board mem- bers were informed it would cost approximately $6,000 to upgrade the hospital's. lone smoking room to meet strin- gent . new air ventilation requirements -as of Jan. 1, 1996. Some Board members were concerned, however, that life- long smokers would be denied the opportunity to light up. - "I'm concerned about an individual who has smoked their whole life, then they're cut off cold- turkey," said one board member. Board members were informed that the smoking room was being used primarily by staff, not patients. "The vast majority ofpeople who smoked downstairs were staff and young, able-bodied, people," said Bill Thibert, Chief Executive Officer. "Very rarely was it a palliative care patient who was going down into the room." The decision • to become smoke-free was approved by a large majority but not unani- mously.
