The rain held off for a cere- mony on a warm afternoon as the community celebrated the grand opening and blessing of the Community Soccer Project. With the help of volunteers four soccer fields were created behind St. Columban Roman Catholic Church. A portable was also erected for teams to use as a change room and for storage. "It's nice to corns out on a Tuesday or a Thursday and see four games at the same time," said Dave DcVrics, president of the St. Columban Minor Soccer Association. If anyone questioned St. Columban's support of soccer in the past they can't now, said DeVries. "If that's not commitment by St. Columban I don't know what is," he said, noting that most soccer facilities in other jurisdictions are run by the municipality. The new fields will be used by 190 children who are mem- bers of twelve teams in the minor soccer system and also the St. Columban men's team. Project coordinator Tony Arts told the crowd on Sunday that Caddy part of history BY GREGOR CAMPBELL Expositor Staff A caddy from Seaforth played a part, however humble, in the recent first sub -30 nine in U.S. Open history. The record 29 was fired a couple of weeks ago at this year's Open at Shinnecock Hills by Smithfield, North Carolina native Neal Lancaster. He broke the previous mark of 30 shared by 16 other golfers in U.S. Open history. Lancaster, 32, tied the course record with a 5 -under -par 65, and came charging up the back nine for the new ►nark. He finished his first Open with a 4 -over score of 284. Observers describe him as one of the game's "free spirits". His caddy, apparently somewhat fitting of the same description, was Scaforth native Ken Doig Jr. Lancaster wasn't aware of the record until walking off the 18th green. He credited playing partner Fuzzy Zoeller for keeping him "relaxed". Caddy Kenny took his mind off things too, according to an interview in a U.S. newspaper. "My caddy...he hadn't said much to me all clay," Lancaster .said." "When we got to the 15th tee he said, `Do this, do that'. "I said, 'What 1 make four ' birdies in a row and now you get interested. "He's been with inc three weeks now. He's a good guy. He looks like Squiggy from the Laverne & Shirley show." it took a community effort to snake the soccer Iiclds a reality. He outlined the construction costs, operating costs and uni- form costs which wcrc thou- sands and thousands of dollars. He said if it had been a gov- ernment -run project it would cost thousands of dollars more. Volunteers helped to pick stones and till the land. All aspects of the work except moving a hill were done by volunteers. McKillop and Hilbert town- ships gave small donations to the soccer project but otherwise the fields wcrc erected without government support. The soccer field project has been two years in the making. Socccr players from St. Columban have been playing on fields in Dublin, Mitchell and Scaforth until the new facility was ready. As part of Sunday's ceremo- ny two honourary St. Columban soccer jerseys were presented to major volunteer Frank Cronin and Father Joseph Hardy of St. Columban Roman Catholic Church. • Other volunteers were also recognized for their contribu- tions of time and money. The organizers say at some time in the future they would like to erect washrooms at the soccer site. The entire men's soccer team, except for about two members, came through the St. Columban minor soccer sys- tem. Seniors win third place Scaforth Seniors showed they didn't have to take a hack scat to anyone at the recent Tri - County Senior Games in Stratford Junc 19-20. Scaforth earned a third place finish and was awarded a cup after individual performances of four golds and one silver. The third place came in a field of more than 40 towns and villages from Huron, Perth and Middlesex.
