IT WENT IN 1 - St. Columban's John Jordan was being
mauled by a Benfica defender on this throw-in, but he
managed to get a head on the ball and score the equalizer
on the play as the area team upset the previously un-
defeated and league -leading Londoners 3-2 in Western
Ontario Soccer League action at the new St. Columban pitch
Friday night. That's St. Columban midfielder Dave Murray
(9) also in the thick of the fray.
St. Columban bends but doesn't break
They certainly used their
heads Friday night.
St. Columban's men's soccer
team bumped division -leading
Bcnfica out the undefeated
ranks with a disciplined 3-2
victory in Western Ontario
Soccer League Second Division
Central action.
John Jordan's equalizer and
Steve Ryan's winner both came
via second -half headers at St.
Columban's new pitch, as the
home side clawed back from a
2-0 deficit with a smothering
defence and johnny-on-the spot
shooting.
St. ,Columban improved its
league record to 4-1-1 with the
New Seaforth
"Black and white - tight,
fight, fight!"
This may become the rallying
cry for fans of all Seaforth
minor hockey teams in a few
short seasons as the local
minor association has decided
on new colours to replace
traditional Seaforth green
sweaters.
Seaforth & District Minor
Hockey Association director
Graham Nesbitt says basic
win while Bcnfica fell to 5-1-0.
In Cup play last Wednesday
the outcome was not so rosy as
Portuguese Canadians dropped
the locals 2-1 at Strathroy.
Benfica, which toured Europe
and the United States as an
Under -19 side last season,
came into Friday night's game
with impressive early -season
statistics, having fired 24 goals
and only given up three. They
also have a slick little striker
who scored tons of goals with
another team in the Premier
Division last season.
On the other hand St. Colum -
ban has succeeded with a more
plodding long -hall style that
rallying cry?
green costs more these days
because it requires a custom
order that takes longer to
deliver than standard Dallas
Stars colours, which Seaforth
has now adopted.
The new hockey sweaters
will be phased in as needed for
the various local teams. Home
sweaters will be white and'road
jerseys black, both with green
and gold trim.
requires using its strength to
win the one-on-one battles in
the air, very similar to the
winning concoction devised by
Geordie Jack Charlton's power-
ful Republic of Ireland team.
St. Columban had only scored
nine goals, 15 fewer than the
division leaders, and given up
seven in the division going into
the Benfica game.
Coach and players were
openly squabbling on the
Bcnfica bench but the Lon-
doners led 2-1 and looked like
they were going to put the
game away with ball control
and some fancy footwork that
had St. Columban back on its
heels early in the second half.
But steady goalkeeper Jason
Dietz and the bigger St.
Columban team held and
tightened, and the few times
they moved the ball up the
field the opportunistic forwards
didn't dally putting the hall
into the net.
Jordan's equalizer in par-
ticular seemed manufactured
from little morc than a hope
and prayer, from an almost -
impossible angle next to the
Benfica keeper's right post
after Mauro Mascioli's long
throw-in.
Ryan's winner was his
second goal of the game. He
booted the ball home to start
the comeback, down two goals
late in the first half. Midfielder
Dave Murray made the pass
that found Ryan on both his
goals.
In the Cup game at Strathroy
Wednesday St. Columban had
two goals called back in the
loss, after Brian Melady
opened the scoring in the first
half heading home a corner
from Wayne Ryan.
Falcons arc also tied for first
and .ahead of second -place St.
Columban in the division table.
They tripped the locals 1-0
earlier in the schedule but St.
Columban won the appeal and
a replay hasn't been set.
The top teams in the Second
Division's three groups will
playoff at season's end to
determine which advance to the
Western League's First
Division in 1996.
Exeter is at St. Columban for
the local team's next home
game Sunday, June 25 at 2
p.m.

Over 3/4 of the central
air units we service were
never adjusted properly
when installed. The fan
speeds are too high, so
they don't de -humidify
properly, so the house
temperatures must be
set too low, the system is
noisy, and energy costs
are excessive.
The purpose of central
air conditioning is to
create a climate more
like Radville, Sask than
Aklavik.
The refrigerator is that
tall cold thing in the
kitchen.
