Dublin native celebrates
25 years in
Dublin `
by Dorothy Dillon
345-2883
Father John (Jack) Costello,
formerly of Dublin, was
honored at a celebration in his
parish at Christ the King, in
Windsor, Ontario. He the
son of the late Dan Costello
and Therese (Feeney) Costello,
all former Dublin residents.
His most distinguished guest
was his mother, Therese, in her
95th year. Also in attendance
were his brothers, sisters, and
their families, cousins, friends,
former parishioners, religious
sisters, and fellow priests,
including members of the
"Flying Father's" hockey team
of which he is a member. Also
present were a cousin, a Flying
Father, and former Maple Leaf,
Father Les Costello of
Schumaker, Ontario.
Father Jack celebrated Mass
during which it was evident he
was quite conscious of his
hometown and Irish roots. One
musician accompanied the
singers on his Dad's old violin,
a meaningful, sentimental
statement.
The homily was delivered by
Father Chris Quinlan, Father
Maurice Charbonneau and
Sister Maureen Meloche were
readers.
A reception and dinner
followed at the Knights of
Columbus Hall in Windsor.
Anne Marie (Costello)
D'Arcy revealed some hilarious
experiences the nieces and
nephews have enjoyed with
their Uncle. A slide
presentation narrated by his
sister Pat McGilvery of
Chatham evoked gales of
laughter and continued to set
the tone of the fun -infested
special event.
Former parish priests,
Monsignor McGuigan and
Father McCormack lent their
support to their former
assistant. Christ the King'
parishoners "roasted" their
beloved priest with a few witty
insights and even composed a
biographical song of their
perception of Jack as a priest.
Celtic dances and Irish music
were interspersed throughout
the day.
Father Jack emerged as , a
priest with a healthy sense of
humor, an avid sportsman and
a sincere spiritual leader, not
necessarily in that order. His
parishioners presented Father
Jack as a priest for all. ages, the
old, the young, and the in-
betweens.
A day to remember was
enjoyed by guests attending
from many areas including
Dublin, Kingston, Kitchener,
London, Winnipeg, Guelph,
Chatham, New Lowell,
Seaforth, Clinton, Ottawa,
Toronto, Hamilton, Ancaster,
priesthood
Brantford, Port Dover,
Timmins, Tillsonburg, North
Carolina, Schumaker, Windsor
and other points. (Submitted by
Mrs. Celeste McCreight)
