McGavins welcome
baby boy into family
As I was heading into Brus-
sels the other day I glanced at
the sign at McGavins' which
for the past while has read 'It's
a girl! Congrats to Shelley and
Brian.' Well out of the corner
of my cyc I noticed the word
'boy' and I thought someone
has been messing with the sign.
It wasn't until closer inspection
that I noticed it said, 'It's a
boy! Congrats Jeff and
Shannon.' Welcome, Jacob
Jeffery to the world and
Walton. He is the fourth gener-
ation to carry the initials J.J.
The Craigs held their family
reunion at the Walton Hall on
Jane 10. Margaret and Harvey
Craig's daughter Sherrill Chris-
tian flew all the way from
Delaware to_ join them. It was
an extra special occasion as
they celebrated Harvey's 85th
birthday (actual date is July
17). Harvey said he was the
oldest one there and a baby
from London was the youngest.
Although it was dull looking
outside Sunday, Junc 11 it was
anything but, inside Duff's
United Church as they cel-
ebrated their 70th anniversary
as the United Church and 130
years of Presbyterian and
United Church work and wit-
ness. With friendly greetings
from Neil and Marie McGavin
people came into a Sanctuary
filled with (lowers of every
description and music being
played by Phyllis Mitchell,
Glenda Carter and Margery
Hucther. After the Call to
Worship Rcv. Randy Banks ,
reminded everyone that next
Sunday the service will be held
outdoors and pcoplc are to
bring their lawn chairs. After-
wards there will be an old-
fashioned family Sunday
School Picnic and everyone is
to bring a potluck lunch. There
will he several barbecues going
for those with meat to cook.
Rcv. Banks also announced the
'Country Supper Smorgasbord'
on June 25.
He then welcomed Don Sills,
the guest soloist who sang,
'Amazing Grace'. Margery
Hucthcr accompanied him on
the piano. Don is from Scaforth
and attends St. Michael's high
school in Stratford. He is 17
and has been singing since he
was in grade four. His voice
teacher is Mrs. Joan Gaffney of
Mitchell. For the past eight
yea's Don has sung with the
Perth County Youth Choir.
The choir sang, 'Praise the
Lord'. Rcv. Banks then called
the children forward and asked
them if they knew what anni-
versary meant. Some answered
that it has to do with being
married. Rcv. Banks also said
that it could be an important
date cg. like the anniversary of
a wisdom tooth pulled, a wed-
ding or the date of the first
church built on this site. He
told them 130 ycars ago the
church that was built here was
a Presbyterian church. Then in
1925, Junc 10 the first United
Church came into being. Rev.
Banks motioned for the
children to look at the 17
framed photos of the ministers
of this church displayed at the
bi k of the church. He told
them that one of those minis-
ters was Rev. David honest
and with that he asked Phyllis
Ede (Stratford) and David
Forrest Rollings (Churchville),
grandchildren of the late minis-
tcr, to stand. After welcoming
them to the service Rcv. Banks
then drew the children's atten-
tion to the large quilt that was
displayed at the side and he
asked Geoffrey Banks and
Walton
by Patty Banks
887-6860
Sarah McDonald to come ana
read some of the names that
were on the quilt. The quilt had
been given to Rev. Forrest
upon his retirement and Mrs.
Ede had donated it to Duff's
church. Rev. Banks then intro-
duced Rev. Al Johnston, a
retired United Church Minister
who used to have the Brus-
sels/Ethel Charge. He and his
wife Joyce travelled up from
St. Williams (near Brampton)
to be the guest minister. He
told the congregation that when
asked what he didn't like about
being retired he said it was that
he never gets a day off.
Rev. Al began his sermon
which was called, 'Seeing is
Believing -Not' by paraphrasing
1 Corinthians 13. Then he said
that he grew' up in a 'Born -
Again' Christian home where
religion was based on fear. It
wasn't until he entered a
United Church some years later
that he began to spiritually live.
He summed it up in one word:
freedom. He loves the United
Church because of this free-
dom.
He believes that we are all
born with God's Spirit and are
made a little lower than the
angels. He thinks that we
should be emphasizing the
positive in us and not always
dwelling on the darkness with-
in. People should leave the
church on a high, .not on a
downer.
During the presentation of the
offering the choir sang 'Jesus
gives the Bread' accompanied
on the piano by Margery
Huethcr. Rev. Banks gave What
he called 'A Duff's Church
Historical Vignette - Rev.
David Forrest.' He was the 4th
Presbyterian minister to preach
at the church. 1889-1899: From
an -old history book belong to
the church Rcv. Banks read
this about Rcv. Forrest: "He
was faithful in the pulpit and in
the home, and his sympathetic
disposition won him a place in
the hearts of all to whom he
ministered."
