Woman wins in pairs tennis
Linda Doig, of RR 2
Scaforth, was half a winning
pair at the Stratford Tennis
C'lub's 22nd annual men's and
woolen's doubles toumamenl
Saturday.
Boyd Devereaux one of top draft picks
Seaforth's Boyd Devereaux
scored his first gbal in junior
hockey at Parkhill on a tip -in
as a 14 -year-old in October
1992.
Sixty or so junior goals later
he made it to centre stage at
the famed Maple Leaf Gardens
in Toronto Saturday where he
was the first 17 -year-old
selected, and fifth pick overall
in the first round, in the annual
Junior A Ontario Hockey
League draft.
He was taken by the
Kitchener Rangers, coinciden-
tally the same team Dave
McLlwain of Seaforth also
started his major junior career
with.
McLlwain was a "walk-on"
with the Rangers. Boyd is the
highest 01 -IL pikk ever among
the many talented Scaforth and
arca players who have risen
through the ranks. Mike Watt
went in the sixth round a
couple of seasons ago, but he
had indicated to managers
beforehand that he wouldn't
report and planned to play
college hockey in the United
States.
Boyd says he was nervous
and couldn't sleep or eat
Friday night or Saturday mor-
ning. He went down with all
his own family, and the Dave
Parsons family of Stratford
who he has boarded with the
past two seasons as a member
of the Ontario Hockey As-
sociation chain ion junior B
Stratford Cullitons.
The draft started at 9 a.m.
and he was chosen at about
9:30, then donned Ranger
colours in the spotlight for the
cameras and gave a little
speech.
It was a "personal decision"
to opt for junior A over the
American intercollegiate hock-
ey, a route taken by other
prominent local hockey players
such as former Scaforth and
Stratford teammate Watt and
Pat and Rem Murray.
"I can't say one way is better
than the other, there are pros
and cons to both ways and both
lists are big," Boyd said Mon-
day night at his Godcrich
Street home. "It was an in-
dividual decision and each
person is different."
Kitchener attracted Boyd
because it is a university town
and he likes Ranger coach
Geoff Ward, who is rebuilding
with many picks at Saturday's
draft and who led the Waterloo
Siskins to the OHA junior B
season two seasons ago.
Ward gets the most out of his
players, deals with them
directly and is innovative, says
Devereaux. He adds the OHL
has gone to great lengths in
recent seasons to improve how
the education of players is
dealt with, an important con-
sideration because of all the
travelling in the league and its
lengthy schedule.
School hasn't been much of a
problem for Boyd so far. He's
carrying an average in the low
80s at St. Michael's in Strat-
ford, and will auend St.
Jerome's in Kitchener next
year for grade 12.
The Rangers have their first
get-together June 24 for fitness
tests, among other things.
Devereaux says he isn't
playing hockey this summer
but plans to build up his weight
and muscle, which he:has been
doing a lot of since he first
joined the OHA Junior
"D"evelopment League,
Seaforth Centenaires in 1992-
93 at a scrawny 5'4" and 114
lbs.
Three years later he now
stands 6'1" and weighs 180
lbs.
Devereaux played up through
,, the ranks from mite in Seaforth
and helped his teams win three
minor hockey championships.
The Centenaires •aid minor
hockey $1,000 for his release
and he scored seven'goals that
first season in junior. He
scored 12 goals for the junior
B Cullitons his first year in
Stratford, but blossomed this
past season when he finished
second in the league scoring
race with 31 goals and 74
assists during the regular
season, adding another 11 goals
and 17 assists in the playoffs
on the team's run to the
provincial title. He was also a
member of the Ontario's
Under -17 Team.
Junior A will mean yet
another adjustment says Boyd.
The game is faster, the skill
level is higher, the players are
bigger and stronger, they get
much more exposure and there
is far more travelling involved.
Devereaux says he wants to
thank his many coaches over
the years in Seaforth for hel-
ping him get to where he was
on Saturday morning - John
Watt, Bill Weber, Ray Ansteu,
Charlie Roberston, Ken Coyne,
and the Centenaires - but he
knows he hasn't got to where
he wants to get yet.
Winning the junior B title
this past season is one of the
biggest thrills he has had in
hockey so far. Another thrill he
remembers happened way back
in atom, when the Seaforth
team coached by Weber
bumped off Lambeth in the
finals of the International Sil-
ver Stick Tournament, after
losing to them in a qualifying
game leading up to it.
What helpful hints does he
have for any Scaforth
youngsters who might dream of
following in his footsteps?
Shoot a lot, says Boyd. It is
the key to scoring. Even the
great Gretzky only scores once
about every four shots, he
adds, so "keep on shooting and
some of them are bound 'to go
in."
She and Ginny Smith, both
of the host club, brat Flora
Ahchong and Jun Oliver of
London 8-4 in the women's B
final.
Doig is a native of Stratford
and a teacher at Scaforth
District High Schtxol.
Former Cent is

Ben Sen of Stratford, a big
15 -year-old (lelenceman with
Seaforth's junior hockey Cen-
tenaires two seasons ago, was
selected in the 16th round of
Saturday's OHL draft in
Toronto by the Peterborough
Petes. Sen played triple A
midget in Waterloo last season.
