"Gracious in defeat" could inmost be a phrase invented to describe Liberal candidate John Jewitt, who kept on a smiling face and an upbeat chatter while polls showed him falling further and further behind Helen Johns in last Thursday's provincial election. Campaign workers and Liberal supporters gathered at Jewitt's Clinton campaign office Thursday cvcning to await results. When the first poll was received from Huron - view, it showed Progressive Conservative candidate Johns and Jcwitt tied with 27 votes apiece. With the polls closing at 8 p.m., totals showed by 8:27 that Johns held the lead with 417 votes, cotnparcd to 140 for Jewitt and 205 for NDP incum- bent Paul Klopp. Just four minutes later, at 8:31, the announcement was made over the television that the Conservatives would have a majority government. That the Conservative wave across the province was not about to be broken in Huron was obvious, as at 8:33, the totals showed Johns with a commanding lead, holding 1,024 votes, compared to 510 for Jcwitt and 548 for Klopp. Within 20 minutes, Johns' victory was announced for Huron County. As the "figures continued to flow in, and people gathered both in campaign headquarters and outside on the sidewalk, Jewitt, of Hallett Township, kept on a smiling face, greeting visitors by name and thanking them for their assistance and support. At one point, he even urged supporter Brucc Bergsma of HuIlctt Township to "Smile Bruce," stating; "It's not that bad...it could be worse." Throughout the evening, his supporters stood fast behind the candidate, applauding whenever he won a poll, and once ap- plauding when Klopp was the winner from one area. When most of the polls had been tabulated, Jcwitt took time to thank his supporters before DAVID EMSLIE PHOTO SMILES DESPITE DEFEAT - A smiling John Jewitt laughs and jokes with members of the Clinton Legion Pipe Band, who played him into his party at the Blyth Community Centre last Thursday. The Liberal candidate was a strong contender until the election momentum swung away from the Liberals provincially. He placed second in Huron. leaving for a party in Blyth. He thanked all for working so hard for his campaign, and noted "a tremendous amount of energy was expended...I appreciate it." Stating that he didn't feel at all bad about the loss, the candidate said that they gave the election their best shot. Noting that although all of those gathered would have been much happier if they had come out on top, Jcwitt said he was pleased to be able to go through the political process, and was now looking forward to getting back to work. Before urging all to go to Blyth and have a good time, Jewitt, with the assistance of a relative, quoted Tory Grigg, a sports caster from the past at CKNX. The quote, which proved most appropriate in light of Jcwitt's actions for the night, was, "You always win if you lose with a smile." At his party in Blyth, as in Clinton, Jcwitt gave recognition to Johns for the victory, noting he had called to give his congratulations, and would be visiting her party later in the evening. In Blyth, Jewitt was played into the community centre by the Clinton Legion Pipe Band. After thanking all for their assistance, and stating, "It has been a long process," Jewitt stated there would be one thing worse than losing the election, and said that would be "wi- nning an election and not being able to keep the commitments made." This comment met with a good round of applause from those gathered. Concluding his statements, the 55 -year-old farmer and factory worker noted that the event in Blyth was advertised as a victory party, "and it is a victory party. We have been able to take part in the political process, and I'm grateful to have taken part in that process."
