SCHOOL NEWS
Congratulations go to the
following grade three and four
pupils who were able to com-
pete in the Regional Track and
Field meet that was held at the
Scaforth District High School
last week - Jillian Rickert,

by Patty Banks
887-686U
McDonald, Kendra Bennewies,
Devin and Darcy McCutchcon,
Robbie McClure, Jay
Cochrane, Ben Bachert, Tyler
Elligsen, Brandon Blake and
Kevin Wilbee. This was the
first time that the Walton
School was able to participate
in such an event due to the fact
that the school has never had
grade fours in it.
Due to the rain the ball tour-
nament in Walton was
cancelled but it didn't dampen
the spirits of the people who
came out for the dance at the
hall Friday night. The Tiffins
played all the old numbers and
at one point they called up
Phyllis Mitchell to play the
fiddle with them. She joined
right in as if she had always
played with them. The ra;
didn't keep the `treasurs
seekers' away on Saturday
either as car loads of people hit
Walton's village garage sales.
Everything from homemade
butter tarts to beautiful antique
furniture could be had for a
price that day.
Neil McGavin had a little
surprise on his birthday June 1.
His wife suggested to him that
they go down to the Walton
Inn for breakfast. Liule did he
know that Marie bad some of
his friends there waiting to
share the breakfast with him.
So he did get a nice surprise
when he walked through the
door.
Rev. Banks announced that
next Sunday is Anniversary
Sunday and the service will
start at 11 a.m. Guest speaker
Rev. Al Johnston will take the
service and Don Sills will be
the guest soloist. There will be
a lunch served after the service.
The United Church Women are
to be at the church on Junc 7
at 7:15 so they can go to
PP','onlca for a tour. He

Swine club learns
all about pigs
by JOHN STOREY
The 4-H Swine club, led
by Don Dodds, had its first
meeting on May 29, starting
at 7:30 p.m. at Richard and
Debbie and Adam Sinclair's
near Goderich. All eleven
people in the club were
present at the meeting,
where they judged farrow-
ing gilts. Club members
then talked about the
advantages and disadvan-
tages of keeping pigs in
barns, where to make a
barn and what should be in
a barn.
The next meeting will be
on June 14 at 7:45 p.m. at
Lawra Sinclair's. Did you
know that pigs don't sweat?
This is why they make
footballs out of pig skin, so
it doesn't rip.
Residents enjoy warmth
It's hard to believe that the
month of May has come and
gone already at Maplewood
Manor Retirement residence.
Residents are enjoying visiting
outside on the porches now that
warmer temperatures have
arrived.
Bea Kale, Jean Durst, Helen
Nott, Mabel Strong, Jean Ross
and Viola Lawson did a splen-
did job modelling the spring
and summer fashions at the
Geri Fashions fashion show at
Maplewood.
Even though it was raining, it
did not dampen spirits for a
bus trip to Grand Bend. It was
good to see the lake again and
the many signs that summer
will soon be here - the ice
cream cones were good too.
The women of Maplewood
received a corsage for their
very special occasion -
Mother's Day.
Sandra Feltz, a public health
nurse, visited Maplewood to
give a presentation on fall
prevention. It was a very inter-
esting topic for the seniors.
The crokinole senior games
were held at Maplewood. Con-
gratulations go to Herta
Brodhagen and Peggi Perkins -
winners of the tournament.
Max Ducharme and the
Townliners provided musical
entertainment this month. Resi-
dents . have perfected . the bird
dance and heel -toe polka!
A dinner was held to recog-
nize a very, very special group
of people - Maplewood's vol-
unteers. The staff and residents
just couldn't do it without
them.
Pastor Rick Lucas, Rev.
Bruce Cook, Rev. James Sloan
and Rev. Cheryl -Ann
Stadelbaucr-Sampa provided
church services at Maplewood
during the month of May.
Their dedication is truly
appreciated.
Marion Rose, Carol Carter
and Bill Gibson provided the
music for the sing -a -longs.
Their visits keep everyone's
singing voice in tune.
Residents enjoyed a visit
from Kathy McNichol and her
new baby boy - Kurtis. Con-
gratulations on your new arri-
val.
Everyone has been kept busy
with baking club, crafts, bingo,
euchre, visits from Scaforth
Public School students, hymn
sing, exercises and Expositor
Hour. It seems there is never a,
dull moment at Maplewood,
