Obstacles biggest challenge
BY TIM CUMMING
Expositor Editor
Athletics is not always about
winning, according to a top
university volleyball coach and
former star in the sport.
"To be successful is about
hard work, it doesn't mean
always winning," said Kristine
Drakich, guest speaker at
Seaforth District High School's
Athletic Awards night on
Wednesday. "My biggest suc-
cess in sport is not winning a
championship but overcoming
an obstacle."
The formet member of
Canada's women's volleyball
team told the students that she
made the team despite her
height (which at 5' 7 is short
for international competition).
After she received a knee
injury on Friday, January 13,
1989 (which sidelined her from
the national team) she received
the opportunity to coach at the
University of Toronto...where
she has been ever since.
The Head Coach told the full
crowd of students the story of
one of her team's most inspir-
ing players.
The woman was not one of
the top players and did not play
many games. She was a single
mother who had left an abusive
relationship. She raised her
child, made every practice and
maintained good marks in a
demanding academic program.
"She succeeded in a way
other people only dreamed of."
As coach, Drakich has won a
university Coach of the Year
award in three different years
and won 1992 Coach of the
Year from the Ontario Volley-
ball Association. As a player
she was captain of the Team
Ontario volleyball team which
won a bronze medal at the
Canada Games. Drakich is also
a professional beach volleyball
player who was ranked as
number one player in Canada
in the early 1990's.
SDHS says
farewell
Student athletes at Seaforth
District High School were
visibly moved on Wednesday
night as they said 'goodbye' to
teacher Jayne Walsh.
The seven-year coach at the
school is leaving for a job
teaching at the new Roman
Catholic high school in
Clinton.
"I leave here with many
mixed feelings," she told the
large crowd at the gymnasium.
A group of girls who had
been coached by Walsh over
the years sang a stirring ver-
sion of The Wind Beneath My
Wings.
The former Jayne Delaney,
she graduated from Seaforth
District High School in 1983.
She returned to the school as a
teacher in 1988.
In a short speech of appreci-
ation she recalled that she
returned to the school with
trepidation but found that
"much of the camaraderie I felt
as a student remained in these
four walls."
She thanked the people of the
school community for it
telephone calls and kind orris
following her serious acci-
dent in January.
She said she drew on her
experience as a student when
coaching.
"To me, athletics and aca-
demics whent hand in hand,"
she said. "A healthy body
meant a healthy mind."
She told the student athletes
it's important to represent their
school and community as
ambassadors.
Seaforth District High School
teacher Terry Johnston, who
was a teacher at SDHS when
Walsh was a student and later
coached side-by-side with her
when she was a teacher,
lamented her leaving.
"We can't afford to lose the
calibre of people we're losing,"
said Johnston. "We need role
models like Jayne for our
younger female adults to emu-
late."
Also leaving Seaforth District
High School this year are
teachers Martha Hook, Jennifer
Goodwin and Jordan Ribkoff.

CHALLENGE INTO OPPORTUNITY - Obstacles can
sometimes become opportunities, said guest speaker
Kristine Drakich, at the annual athletics banquet at Seaforth
District High School.
Despite her string of athletic
successes, Drakich says sports
can have highs and lows. One
notable example was that her
team was unable to qualify for
the Olympics in 1988. (The
team was fourth place at an
Olympic Qualifying Tourna-
ment in Italy).
The 29 -year-old, bronze -
skinned beach volleyball pro
shared her recollection of play-
ing in a gymnasium, much like
Seaforth's, in high school.
Her baskbetball team was in
the semi-finals with seconds
left in the deciding game. Her
team was down by only one
point and she was given the
ball and was supposed to make
a pass.
Unfortunately, the game was
played in a neutral location
with a low ceiling and
Drakich's high pass hit the
rafters and her team lost.
The former high school dis-
cus champion says she regrets
she has not gone back to her
own high school since leaving
it 12 years ago.
Drakich speaks as part of the
speaker's bureau, FAME
(Female Athletes Motivating
Excellence).
It was especially remarkable
that Drakich was chosen to be
guest speaker as this honour is
usually bestowed upon an
alumnus of the school.
