Teens learn healthier bod
by LEEANNE LAVIS
Pressure from society, the
media and the fashion industry
has everyone striving for the
"perfect body". Females and
inales are faced with living up
to an ideal that is not at all
realistic and not achievable in a
healthy way.
For females, the media's
portrayal of the 'perfect body'
is tall and very thin. According
to a pamphlet distributed by the
Huron County Health Unit, the
average woman is five inches
shorter and weighs 23 per cent
more than the average fashion
model who is five foot 11 and
weighs 115 pounds. Achieving
this ideal body is not realistic
for most women.
Historically, pressure to look
a certain way hasn't been as
focused on men. However, this
is dramatically changing. For
males, the need for a muscular
body has led many into the
dangerous practice of using
steroids.
During a seminar last month
Peer Mentors from the five
high schools across Huron
County gathered at Ontario
Street United Church in
Clinton to discuss the problems
with the misconceptions of the
ideal body.
The students, who are trained
to help other students make a
positive transition between
public school and high school,
were asked to draw two pic-
tures of what they felt the ideal
male and female body looked
like. Most of the teenagers
ended up with images that
looked almost identical to
Barbie and Ken dolls. These
arc the images that have fil-
tered into our culture over
many years, said Beth Wilck, a
nutritionist at the Huron
County Health Unit. Women,
especially, are striving for
bodies that are starved.
"There's a lot of pressure out
there to look another way,"
said Wilck. "There are gener-
ations of hungry and under-
nourished women."
"Body image is how you see
yourself and how you feel
about your appearance. Studies
show more than 50 per cent of
people are unhappy with their
body shape or sire," said the
pamphlet from the health unit.
What people don't seem to
acknowledge is that there are a
variety of shapes and sizes.
As a result of pressures from
society and the media, many
children and teens have
adopted harmful eating styles.
According to statistics at the
health unit, "50 per cent of
girls have dieted before nine
years of age, binging and purg-
ing is reported by 20 per cent
of teens; more than 50 per cent
of people are unhappy with
their body shape or size, two-
thirds of adult women at a
healthy weight are dieting; and

For too long political policies have been dictated by expedience and short-sight-
ed reactions to circumstances. The social and economic well-being of our
province demands a reordering of the entire role and operation of government.
The foundation of good government and effective representation rests on the
application of timeless moral principles - resourcefulness, reliability, decisiveness,
justice, discernment, self-control, compassion, diligence and accountability.
The Family Coalition Party and Phil Cornish commit to upholding these princi-

PLAN OF THE WEEK
PLAN NO. U-881
STYLISH HOME SUITS CITY LOT
BY M. TYNAN
Copyright 1994
This two storey design is both narrow and relatively shallow. making it suitable for the smaller lots
commonly available in the city.
An efficient floor plan ensures that the available floor area is comfortably spacious as well as stylish.
A Targe living room partially open to the dining room creates a good sized atmosphere for entertain-
ing, and features a bay window in the living room and a coffered ceiling in the dining room. The
kitchen boasts plenty of cupboard and counter space and a pantry. An open plan design for the family
room, nook, and kitchen creates a country style kitchen complete with a cosy fireplace.
A large utility room is conveniently located upstairs where most of the laundry is generated. The
master bedroom features a vaulted ailing, a walk-in closet, a private study, and access to the main
bathroom.
An unfinished basement awaits your own creative touch.
Plans for U-881 may be obtained for S425.00 for a package of five complete sets of working prints
and $39.00 for each additional set of the same plan. Allow 515.00 extra to cover the cost of postage
and handling (B.C. residents add applicable sales tax to plan total) (All Canadian residents add 7%
(SST to plan total plus postage and handling).
This is one of our new designs. Many innovative plans are now available in our home plan catalogue
