Females and inales are faced with living up to an ideal that is not at all realistic and not achievable in a healthy way. For females, the media's portrayal of the 'perfect body' is tall and very thin. According to a pamphlet distributed by the Huron County Health Unit, the average woman is five inches shorter and weighs 23 per cent more than the average fashion model who is five foot 11 and weighs 115 pounds. Achieving this ideal body is not realistic for most women. Historically, pressure to look a certain way hasn't been as focused on men. However, this is dramatically changing. For males, the need for a muscular body has led many into the dangerous practice of using steroids. During a seminar last month Peer Mentors from the five high schools across Huron County gathered at Ontario Street United Church in Clinton to discuss the problems with the misconceptions of the ideal body. The students, who are trained to help other students make a positive transition between public school and high school, were asked to draw two pic- tures of what they felt the ideal male and female body looked like. Most of the teenagers ended up with images that looked almost identical to Barbie and Ken dolls. These arc the images that have fil- tered into our culture over many years, said Beth Wilck, a nutritionist at the Huron County Health Unit. Women, especially, are striving for bodies that are starved. "There's a lot of pressure out there to look another way," said Wilck. "There are gener- ations of hungry and under- nourished women." "Body image is how you see yourself and how you feel about your appearance. Studies show more than 50 per cent of people are unhappy with their body shape or sire," said the pamphlet from the health unit. What people don't seem to acknowledge is that there are a variety of shapes and sizes. As a result of pressures from society and the media, many children and teens have adopted harmful eating styles. According to statistics at the health unit, "50 per cent of girls have dieted before nine years of age, binging and purg- ing is reported by 20 per cent of teens; more than 50 per cent of people are unhappy with their body shape or size, two- thirds of adult women at a healthy weight are dieting; and BODY IMAGES - Peer Mentors from the five high schools in Huron County, including Seaforth District High School, participated in a 'body imaging' seminar at Ontario Street United Church last Wednesday. These students, from left, are Cheryl Alexander and Christy Scott, both from Central Huron Secondary School, and Kathy Larsen from Goderich District Collegiate Institute. 1 EANXE [AVIS PHOTO 28 per cent of teenage girls and weight, have a tremendous sing on a baton, adding that 40 per cent of women in their impact.
