'glitches' in a big operation

There have been some inter-

Lyle Haney has a super
parade planned. At the present
time there are 9 marching
bands, 50 entries and 90
horses. Did you ever plan a
parade? "Line 'em up and
march 'em off" was the way I
saw it. We may have to plant a
tree to replace all the paper
used corresponding with town,
township and county for appro-
val for route and detours and
road closures, and notifying
fire department, police and
ambulance of designated route.
But Lyle has it under conLul
and a great parade it will be on
Sunday, August 6.

The plight of a Chatham
cash-strapped couple who are
determined to attend the trial
related to the brutal slaying of
their seven-year-old son has
caught the attention of
Goderich resident Anne Marie
Lentz.
She is hoping to rally
financial support so Dale and
Deb Miller can attend the trial
of Jeffrey Wayne Manley, now
19, who is charged with second
degree murder in Danny
Miller's slaying. The June 18
prehearing and trial beginning
Sept. 6, which is scheduled for
four weeks, have been moved
to Goderich.
"Danny was a seven-year old
boy. This little boy never had a
chance. No first date. No first
girlfriend. No baseball this
year," said Lentz.
Chatham Police Deputy Chief
Carl Herder, who also heads
the victims' services unit, said
fundraising efforts arc 'slow in
that community.
"We really haven't started
too much because (the trial's)
not until September," said
Herder. He has met with a
number of organizations that
arc interested in fundraising.
St. Joseph's Catholic School,
where Danny was a Grade 2
student, intends to hold hotdog
days and other events run by
the students.
The victims' services unit
will co-ordinate fundraising,
including efforts in Goderich,
to ensure all the financial needs
of the Miller family arc met.
"We just don't want all
people in all different areas
running after the same thing,"
he said.
Anyone interested in making
a donation may deposit it to the
Danny Miller fund at the Bank
of Montreal, Goderich, or send
it c/o Anne Lentz., 9 Suncoast

Johns stresses representation
cont. from page 9
"I have lots of education,
having a Masters in Business,
and an accounting and com-
merce degree, and I promise
to represent the people well.
"Agriculture, for example,
is a very big business in
Huron County and we need to
have people who understand
the business side of agricul-
ture and can represent it.
"As a result of my educa-
tion and management experi-
ence, I hope to help people
have their representation more
fairly heard in Toronto."
In this, she will be aided by
the PC leader, Mike Harris,
who is "highly acclaimed in
the polls," she added.
"Especially in rural Ontario,
people can really tie in to him,
because he comes from rural
Ontario and he feels that it's
an important part of the
province's future.
"We need somebody who
las a fair amount of influence
in Queen's Park, so they can
make sure those bills don't get
to the point where there is a
bill that doesn't take into
account rural Ontario," Johns
added.
Overall, what makes the PC
party different from the rest?
"That's an interesting ques-
tion," she said, laughing. "I
tell them our platform has
been in existence for a year
and a half. The Liberals have
put their plan out in the last 20
days, and the NDP in the last
five or 10 days.
"We're saying our platform's
been tested. The economic
model was put through the
University of Toronto School
of Economics" as well as
Midland Walwyn, "so people
have had time to evaluate our
program and there's been no
indication that it isn't viable."

Letters to the Editor
Gun law about political
gain, not stopping crime,
says writer of letter
Dear Editor,
Mr. Gates from Kincardine
seems very disturbed by dissent
within the party he supports.
His concern with Mr. Steckle's
actions and his party's reaction
have shown most people that
the Liberal party is run by a
small group at the top who
want no input from anywhere
else.
The legal gun -owning public
in this country is one of the
most stable and conservative
groups anywhere. The problem
is very simple. It's a lack of
credibility with politicians. We
have had handgun registration
since the 1930s but this has not
eliminated crime with
handguns. Those that are stolen
from registered owners
represent a very small portion
of those used in crime. Now
Mr. Rock in his wisdom has
decided to steal, yes I said
steal, almost half the registered
handguns in Canada from legal
registered owners with no
compensation. Not all al once
mind you because the political
flak would be too embarrassing
but by attrition. If these
legally -owned firearms are so
dangerous to the public then
why leave them in the public's
hands any longer? If they are
not dangerous to the public
then why is the government
going to steal from you heirs
when you die. Let me ask any
of you who are not firearms
owners - if the government
decided to seize some of your
personal property without
compensation what you think
of the government? you begin
to wonder just where the
criminals in this country are
operating.
I can tell you, Mr. Gates, the
people who support Mr.
Steckle believe in a free and
open society, not one in which
their govemment deals in fear -
mongering for reasons they
give which will not stand the
light of day.
Registering shotguns and
rifles will not prevent suicide
(which represents the largest
part of firearms deaths), it will
not deter criminal use of
firearms. It will not prevent
criminals from obtaining
firearms. The government
hasn't been able to stop the
illegal smuggling of liquor,
cigarettes and drugs, how will
registration stop gun
smuggling?
In the wake of the Oklahoma
tragedy Mr. Rock tries to
equate firearms registration
with preventing the use of
fertilizers in bombs. Obviously
he believes the non -gun owning
public is very stupid. I suggest
he stay away from diesel fuel,
he might explode himself.
Mr. Rock has promised that
firearm owners will bear the
burden of paying for his
registry. Well, in times of high
taxation this is just another tax
which draws money out of the
economy and into government
coffers. Once this system is in
place the cost will go up and
up til it chokes off the very
reason for its being. Is this by
accident or design?
Everyone in this country
wants less crime and violence
but firearm registration has
nothing to do with the
prevention of either.
The government is trying to
fool the general population by
labelling the legal firearm's
owner as a criminal and then
attacking him instead of
addressing the more
complicated causes of crime.
I assure you Mr. Gates that
firearm owners are not going to
rise up and overthrow the
government but this debate on
registration has opened a lot of
eyes about what your. -political
party • really ' abbut
ordinary people. All they are
interested in is political gain or
filling their pockets. Good luck
to you.
Yours truly,
Jim Butcher
