Seaforth track athletes excel
Seaforth-area athletes weren't
standing still at last week's
Huron -Perth Conference track
and field championships at
Goderich.
There were many outstanding
team and individual performan-
ces.
Carly Price of Seaforth
District High School and Jason
Henderson of RR 1 Seaforth, a
grade 12 student at St. Michael
in Stratford, were individual
junior girls and boys cham-
pions.
The SDHS midget girls also
shared that disvision's team
title for the first time in school
history.
Henderson broke a 14 -year-
old record in the metric half -
mile, the 800m, with a time of
2:02.2. He was nine -seconds
better than the second -place
finisher, almost an eternity in a
middle distance race. Hender-
son also won the 300m hurdles
and 400m, and as anchor
stormed from about 20 -metres
back to help the St. Mike's
junior boys 400m relay team
finish a close second.
It was the second year in a
row Henderson has been a H -P
Conference junior boys
champ.
His 800m record was just .3
seconds shy of his personal
best, and .2 seconds better than
the previous record of 2:02.4
set by Dave Lamont of Pal-
merston. Norwell in 1981.
St. Mike's finished second
overall in the two-day cham-
pionship with 549 points to
Wingham F.E. Madill's 899.
The top five finishers all
qualified for this week's WOS-
SA meet in London yesterday
and today (Wednesday).
Results weren't available at
press time.
Price won junior girls 300m
hurdles in a time of 48.40, a
whopping almost 3 seconds
faster than the runner-up, and
the 200m sprint in a time of
27.8.
Laura Strangway, Lisa
Reynolds, Amy Hamon, Caitlin
Ferguson, Janelle Wood and
Lori Horst were the members
of the winning midget team.
Young area girls evidently
have a penchant for running
fast while jumping over things.
Four of the top five finishers in
the midget girls 300m hurdles
have local links.
Seaforth finished one-two,
with Hamon • leading the way
with a time of 48.80, followed
by Horst at 56.30. Staffa-area
Melissa Robertson of St.
Mike's finished fourth and
Wood of Seaforth was fifth.
Robertson also finished
second in the 80m hurdles.
Seaforth's Lisa Reynolds is a
speedster. She won the midget
girls 100m in a time of 13.5.

at Clinton, won the mid et

girls 80m hurdles in a time of
13.8.
Ben Murray of RR 1 Dublin,
a student at St. Mike's,
grabbed two firsts and a
second. He won the midget
boys 400m in 56.7, the triple
jump with a distance of
10.93m, and finished second in.
the 200m.
Karl Reynolds finished third
in the midget boys long jump
and Everett Smith was fifth in
midget javelin. Both are SDHS
students.
Seaforth's Bruce Griffin won
the junior boys 110m hurdles
in a time of 18.5, and team-
mate Chad McCallum was
second behind •Henderson in
the junior boys 300m hurdles.
In junior girls competition,
Seaforth's Teresa McFarlane
was fourth in the 3,000m and
Anna Mailloux, from Seaforth
and a student at St. Mikes, was
fourth in the javelin.
Lori Perrie of SDHS was
nipped by a mere .20m to
finish second in the senior
discus, and the school's senior
girls 4x400m relay team was
fourth.
Seaforth's Justin Rodney won
the senior boys 110m hurdles
for St. Mikes in a time of 19.1,
and finished third behind Steve
Geiger in 400m hurdles.
Geiger, who is from Zurich
but familiar to arca sports fans
for his play with Seaforth's
junior hockey team the past
few years, won both the senior
boys 200m and 400m and
finished second in the 400m
hurdles.

ger is back
Campbell, now in his sixth
season as general manager, was
given the green light by the
executive to pursue affiliation
possibilities with junior B
teams.
Executive member Mike
Kelly will spearhead it's
fundraising committee.
Dave Murray and Jim
Campbell, recently named co-
head coaches of the Cen-
tenaires, resigned from the
executive but will continue to
help with some of its various
activities, if time permits.
The team still requires a level
3 trainer next season and is
also still seeking volunteers to
either join the executive or help
with various tasks this coming
season.
Any will be welcomed at the
executive's next regularly
scheduled meeting Thursday,
June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Seaforth
and District Community
Centres.
"The more the merrier," says
Murray..
