Woman's daughter on TV
Congratulations to Shayne
and Jay Cockrane whose dog
Sasha, six puppies on Saturday.
The two excited boys came up
to our house to give the good
news. The dog had been over-
due and her owners were get-
ting a big anxious. Jay said that
morning his dad told Sasha that
she had better have puppies
that day. Well, their dog is so
well-trained that she did exact-
ly that!
Audrey Hackwell got a very
pleasant surprise this past week
as she tuned into the Dini Petty
T.V. show and saw her daugh-
ter Pamela. Pamela works on
the set of 'Due South' as a
caterer and apparently all the
'behind the scenes' people
were being interviewed by
reporters from the show.
Anyone passing by the
Walton Ball park will notice
that there arc two new light
standards that are in the pro-
cess of being set up. The very
committed and hard working
Recreation club has raised
enough money for this to take
place. Now fielders won't be

able to use the excuse that they
missed the ball because there
wasn't enough light.
Audrey and Howard
Hackwell greeted worshippers
at Duff's United Church on
Mother's Day, May 13.
Geoffrey Banks started the
service off by lighting the
Christ Candle. Rev. Randy
Banks greeted everyone by
wishing them a 'Happy Family
Day.' He called all the young
children forward and using a
little story from a book 'Illus-
trations Unlimited' he told
about the science teacher who
asked the children the question,
'My name starts with M and I
pick up things. What am 1?'
Before Rev. Banks could con-
tinue with the story one of the
children called out 'a Mother!'
'Right' said Rev. Banks.
'That's what the little boy in
the class said too. The teacher
was expecting the answer to be
'a magnet'.
Rev. Banks' sermon was
called, 'Our Work as
Witnesses'.
This week at Walton Public
School all of the pupils have
been very busy making
Mother's Day crafts and cards.
Adam Coombs reported that in
his grade 4 class they decor-
ated little straw hats and made
cards for their mothers. He also
wanted everyone to know that
they have picked new teams
for 3 -pitch.
The grade three class had a
lot of fun working with puns as
they made up their cat -shaped
note pads for mom...' You're a
purrfect mom'; 'You're the
cat's meow'; 'Have a happy
meowther's day'. The class
also had Mrs. Lubbers and
Mrs. Bucrman came in and
helped the kids make cookies
for 'Authors day' next week.
The grade ones were very
creative in their Mother's Day
gifts.
Community mourns loss
Deepest sympathy from the
community is extended to the
brothers, sisters, nieces, nep-
hews, relatives and friends of
Frank Nolan who died last
week. Mass of the Christian
Burial was celebrated by Father
J. Hardy at 11 a.m. on Satur-
day at the St. Columban Cath-
olic Church.
Sister Jean Moylan of
Windsor visited on the week-

Seniors enjoy smoking
continued from front page
"It's the only enjoyment 1
get," said Laura Emmerson, 86,
who has been smoking since
she was 13. Living at
Huronview for approximately
five months, she said a
smoking ban wouldn't result in
her kicking the habit, but rather
she would end up going outside
to light up. "Summer is coming
I hope," she remarked, also
stating that it would be cruel if
she and others had to go
outside at winter to have a
cigarette.
"(Quitting) is not easy when
you've smoked as long as I
have," Emmerson added.
Marg Brakiis, a Huronview
resident for 11 years, said she
wouldn't have a choice but to
quit. because she can't walk
and going to another nursing
home is not an option for her.
"Childish" is how 15 -year
tenant Clayton Stecles regards
a potential ban on smoking at
Huronview. "They'll be telling
us not to go to the bathroom
pretty soon...(Huronview) is
supposed to be our home," he
said. Smoking since he was 17,
the 74 -year-old also explained
that he cherishes his morning
ritual of coffee and a cigarette
and that "it hasn't killed me
yet."
Although resident Bert
Colombe hasn't smoked for 25
years, he said he can't see why
the administration would even
have to resort to a smoking
ban, pointing out that there is
at least one unused room that
could be converted to a
designated smoking area.
Cathie Brown, homes
administrator with Huronview
and Huronlea, said calling the
situation a proposed ban "is a
bit strong," and that she
doesn't want residents who
smoke to be alarmed.
"We have options and we are
looking at them. That's true
with every place - like arenas,"
she said. Brown also said the
Health and Seniors Committee
is taking things like space,
finances and air quality into
consideration in it's decision.
