The Seaforth Centenaires
hope a winning combination
from a decade ago can light a
lire under the local junior
hockey team in its 22nd
season.
The executive named Dave
Murray and Jim Campbell as
head coaches of the
Centenaires last week. Dave
Akey was appointed assistant
coach.
All are well known in the
area hockey community, came
up through local minor hockey
ranks and played for the
Centenaires in their most
successful stretch 1984 to
1986, which ended with the
team's only Ontario Hockey
Association championship.
The three played a total of
nine seasons for the
Centenaires.
They inherit the second most
successful squad in the team's
history, a group that has played
.500 hockey the past two
seasons, but lacked cohesion,
fire and focus down the stretch
and into the playoffs late last
winter.
The Cents went down with
some fight, dropping three one -
goal decisions to a red-hot
opponent, but still were swept
in four -straight games in the
first round.
The new head coaches both
work at businesses on
Seaforth's Main Street and
played hockey together locally
for about 20 years, all the way
up from novice.
Murray, 30, is a lawyer who
lives in Brucefield and who
was captain of the Cents and
their leading scorer as a
Ieftwinger in their glory years
a decade ago. He won the Jack.
McLlwain trophy three times in
a row between 1983 and 1986
for being the Centenaire who
best combined sportsmanship
with ability.
He returned to the area in
January 1994 after eight years
at Sir Wilfrid Laurier
Universit an the University
of Calg l layed' ay,
for the RAMS CruSadets last
season and is also an
accomplished soccer player, a
fullback when at Laurier and
now a mid -fielder with St.
Columban.
Murray comes from a
Dublin -area hockey family.
Two of his brothers play
professionally in the United
States. and the other was
drafted by the National Hockey
League's L.A. Kings several
year:, ago and was one of the
top players in U.S. college
ranks last season.

Campbell, 30, is an account
manager at a local bank.
Arguably the best pure shooter
the local juniors have ever
produced, he played his off
wing on the right and despite
injury notched about 50 goals
for the Centenaires in their
championship season. He later
shared the league scoring
championship as a sniper with
Seaforth's senior Seahawks.
He moved to Watford for a
number of years but returned to
Seaforth last year.
Both Murray and Campbell
have young families and
neither has hockey coaching
experience, although Campbell
helped manage the Seaforth
midgets in the late 1980s when
Mike Kelly and Don
Williamson coached the team.
The new head -coaching
tandem says they both will
make all practices, and one of
them will always be in charge
behind the bench.
