End of war is remembered Hensall Legion Branch 468 by LILLIAN BEER This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the second World War in Europe on May 8, 1945. Many Canadian army veterans will be travelling overseas to Holland to commemorate V.E. Day, and I am sure this trip will bring back many mixed emotions but lets not forget those Canadians who also served in the Air Force, Navy and Merchant Marine, in Hong Kong, on the homefront and those who trained our service personnel, every Canadian of the war generations was touched by the war, from the families of those serving overseas and the ' /8"Filtdren who saved their money to buy Victory Stamps, to those who worked in farming, industry, defence production and the Red Cross. During the Second World War almost 1 in 10 Canadians (more than one million) enlisted in, the armed forces. Roughly 100,000 were casualties and 45,607 died. Fatalities in the Merchant Navy alone numbered 1,465 of the approximately 12,000 who served. Canadians everywhere are encouraged to get involved in activities and events which recall the spirit of the times - the good times, the bad times, the comradeship, and the collective effort that overcome this challenge. On May 5 at 7 p.m. there will be a service of remembrance at the North Street United Church, in Godcrich followed by a walk to the cenotaph for a short commemorative ceremony. May 20 in Goderich at 1:30 p.m., Zone C-1 Legion and Ladies Auxiliary members will parade to the cenotaph for a service and then on to dedicate the new fountain which has been presented from the Dutch community. Seaforth Legion by Barbara Scott Church bells recall war end Fifty years ago on May 5 the 25th German Army surrendered to the Allies. On Friday, May 5 church bells in Huron, Perth, Grey and Bruce counties will be ringing to commemorate this date. May 8, 1945 was V.E. Day for ,Victory in Europe. A day of celebration and one of heartbreak for those who lost a loved one, when we realized that they really were not coming home. May 10, 1941 was the date of the biggest bombing raid by the Germans on London England. Many more raids were carried out on London and other cities and towns. What a relief on May 5, 1945 to know these raids were really over and things could get back to a more normal way of life. May 5 each year is also the date of the ceremony to commemorate the 1,800 brave sailors who lost their lives in the Atlantic during the war. Twenty-four War ships were lost there. it is also a time to remember all the sailors and Merchant seaman who gave their lives so gallantly in the War. Never can we thank the men and women of all the services for the sacrifices they made that we can live a free life today. If there is anyone who makes Afghans and would like to donate one or two to the Veterans in Parkwood Hospital, London, it would be very much appreciated. These could be left at Branch 156 Seaforth or contact Barbara Scott at 527- 1787. Wednesday, May 3 is the Ladies Auxiliary Election of Officers. Ladies please plan to attend this important meeting.
