Physiotherapy changes over years
BY TIM CUMMING
Expositor Editor
'Celebrating the past, shaping
the future.'
The physiotherapy depart-
ment at Seaforth Community
Hospital was observing that
theme when they celebrated the
75th anniversary of the Cana-
dian Physiotherapy Association
on Thursday.
At the April 27 open house
old physiotherapy equipment
was displayed beside leading-
edge new equipment.
The new equipment included
a walker which allows the user
to sit down for a rest, new
hand grippers, new -design
crutches, a T.E.N.S. machine
and a 'Hydrafitness' machine
where the user determines the
amount of resistance.
"It's fun for us to dig back
intowhat we used to use com-
pared to what we have now,"
said physiotherapist Betty
Duwyn.
Also on display were books
which help health care recipi-
ents understand the nature of
their own problems.
There is a new philosophy
and new treatments for neck
and back care today, compared
to two decades ago, said
Duwyn. She says while total
bed rest might have been rec-
ommended for some patients in
the past, today the same treat-
ment might involve some
physical activity.
A patient who might at one
time have been admitted to
hospital for a week might now
be sent home with the books
and information needed to help
their own recovery.
"There's a real change in the
philosophy of treatment," said
Duwyn. "We spend a lot of
time on educating the patient,
so they won't reinjure them -

selves."
The patients themselves have
a big role in their own recov-
ery by following the advice of
the physiotherapists.
"What they do at home is
critical," she said. "It makes
the difference between physio-
therapy being effective and not
effective."
The open house on Thursday
was organized by Carol Hunt
and Betty Duwyn. National
Physiotherapy Week took place
from April 23 to 29.

4-H hikers learn
all about nature
BY ROBYN NASH
To start its second
meeting the McKillop #1 4-
H club decided on title
pages and names for books.
They decided to pick
'Happen'n Hikers' by Jane
Bennette. Then they played
a game and left on a hike
to Hullet bush were
discovered many different
birds, plants and nests.
They spent three hours in
the bush learning about
different plants and birds.
After the meeting everyone
went home knowing a little
more about nature then
before.
