Many years of Huronview are remembered BY AMY NEILANDS One hundred years ago, the first Huron County Home, or House of Refuge, was built on the present site of Htuonview. In 1895, after plenty of inquiries to the county council about setting up a home for the homeless and needy, Sam Cooper, a Clinton contractor, built the home on a 200 -acre farm at a cost of ap- proximately $18,000. The home housed about 60 elderly people when it first opened, said Cathie Brown, homes administrator of Huronview and Huronlea, stating that it was a place that was "desperately needed." The first matron and manager of the House of Refuge were Martha and John Jacobs. At the time, the home employed an inspector, whose annual salary was $100; the manager, who received $250 per year plus room and board*,- the matron, who received $150 per year plus room and board; and a physician, who received $150 annually, which included required medicines. The home was "completely self- supporting" from the farm, said Brown. They • grew their own fruits and vegetables and raised their own livestock. Because there were no freezers at this time, everything was preserved, including the meat, which was cured and kept in a salt brine. In 1903, the manager's report showed that the farm yielded, among plenty of other goods, 250 bushels of barley, 420 bushels of oats, 350 bushels of potatoes, 15 bushels of carrots, 40 bushels of apples, 23 tons of hay, 700 head of cabbage and 1,400 quarts of raspberries. To kick-off the celebrations of their 100th birthday, Huronview will be holding an open house on Wednesday, April 26. They will also be holding celebrations throughout the month of June for seniors' month when they will be saying thank you to the families and volunteers for their "efforts in supporting their loved ones in Huronview and Huronlea," said Brown. The Student's Council at SDHS would like to thank the local businesses for their much appreciated generosity in the Easter Festivities at the High School.
