Youths embark on bicycle journey
BY TIM CUMMING
Expositor Editor
Travelling from Thunder Bay to
Goderich is a long trip by bus...but
can you imagine riding that distance
by bicycle? Two young people from
the Brucefield area will be making
that 1,200 km trip this summer on
two wheels.
At the end of June bicyclists
Shane MacPhee and Manny
DeSousa will be driven north to
Thunder Bay. Then, they will take
to the roads of Canada and the
United States.
"If we can do this we can do
anything," says Shane, who is 16.
It will be a challenge to complete
the trip, says their foster father
Brian O'Reilly.
"These guys have never done
anything as hard as this in their
lives, it's the psychological con-
quering of the hills," he said. "It's
up and down and up and down."
Shane and Manny will attempt to
bicycle more than 100 km per day
during their trip. They hope to
finish in a two-week period.
The two youths will be joined by
their foster father, Brian O'Reilly
and Toronto public school teacher
Jim Cook. O'Reilly is experienced
at long-distance bicycle trips and
Cook has help organized similar
trips for school children.
Shane and Manny live with their
foster family at the O'Reilly Home
for teens at RR 1 Brucefield.
The two students will be taking
the bicycle trip to help raise funds
for their agencies, the Huron
County Children's Aid Society and
the Catholic Children's Aid in
Toronto.
"What's better than kids raising
money for other kids?" asks Brian
O'Reilly.
Manny, who is 18, says the trip is
about paying back those agencies
which helped them with their foster
care.
"We had the help we needed, now
we're starting to give to them."
For Manny, the support of his
Children's Aid Society in Toronto,
includes the agency's support of his
small farming operation at the RR 1
Brucefield home.
This bicycle trip is the first time
Manny and Shane have taken on a
project of this size. They have,
however, gone on a demanding
wilderness trip as part of the Out-
ward Bound program near Thundcr
Bay. During the three-week trip a
group of young people were iso-
lated from outside civilization, took
part in rock climbing, canoeing and
kayaking and as individuals took a
three-day solo camp separate from
anyone else.
In anticipation of the bicycle trip
Shane and Manny have been bicycl-
ing regularly and working out at the
Stratford 'Y'. They are currently
learning about their 21 -speed
bicycles and acquiring tips on how
to ride them, such as maintaining
the proper number of revolutions
per minute.
The Thunder Bay to Goderich trip
will take place through roads rec-
ommended by the Canadian Cycle
Association.
A motor home has been lent for
the trip by John and Rose Austin.
(John is a former Reeve of Ashfield
Township). The vehicle will meet
with the boys at various locations
for supplies and accommodation.

4-H REPORT
by JEREMY RYAN
On Thursday, April 20, the St.
Columban 4-H Clubs got together
and started the meeting with the 4-
H pledge and the secretary read the
minutes. We went into our groups
and discussed the roll call.
We talked about resources, natural
and man made. Then we read a
story about a person named Joe, he
always littered and was not respon-
sible. We discussed the things he
did right and wrong.
We learned how to make paper
out of ground up magazines mixed
with water. With the time left we
worked on our folders.
The meeting closed with the 4-H
motto 'learn to do by doing.' The
next meeting will be held in the St.
Columban Church hall on April 27
at 7 p.m
Congratulations to Harry and
Mary Reynen who celebrated their
40th wedding anniversary on Satur-
day. Mr. and Mrs. Reynen, their
relatives and friends attended the 5
p.m. mass on Saturday at St.
Columban Catholic Church.
Keith and Rita Kelly and Brian
Kelly of Stratford visited on Sunday
with Cecilia Ryan and Ester Kelly.
