The winner in the open popular music category was Don Sills, of Seaforth. Second place was Natasha Christie, RR 2 Staffa and in third place were Tracey Pfeifer and Robyn Barker, RR 5 Mitchell, tied. Women's Institute aims for safe, healthy communities After discussions ranging cram budgeting, safety of citizens, child care, strengthening the work ethic, nutrition education to citizens' responsibilities, the Provincial Board Directors of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario voted at their March meeting in Guelph to launch a new focus for the organization,, Safe and Healthy Communities. Since 1988, the focus of FWIO has been the environment. In two years, members initiated over 350 projects. Across the prov- ince these included major,recycling projects, tree planting, and refusing to use disposable items. The first step towards Safe and Healthy Communities will be a provincial seminar in the fall. Com- munity leaders will be invited to identify and prioritize needs, devel- op ideas to address those needs and ,write the project descriptions required for funding applications. The Women's Institute will facili- tate discussions with agencies that have expertise in the target areas. There will be opportunities to net- work with other community leaders. Safe and Healthy Communities is intended to create a positivekatmos- phere for community living. The Edighoffer's (Mitchell) award for top mark in piano sight reading went to Sarah Herold. The St. Patrick, St. Columban and Dublin award for the outstanding soloist from St. Patrick's School in Dublin was Donny Brodhagen. The Jack and Betty Anne Christie award for the most promising boy vocalist in the entire Festival - Justin Skinner. The Beta Sigma Phi Trophy and Replica for the most promising girl vocalist in the entire Festival - Kate Kudelka. The Mitchell Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Cup and Replica for the most promising vocalist in the elementary section of the Festi- val , Laurel Burton. The Bank of Montreal award for the most promising vocalist in the secondary section - Meg Campbell. Ings Restaurant award - $50 to the individual with the highest number of points in piano classes, including solos, duets, trios and sight reading - Laura Scholl. The Rosebank Seed Farms Ltd. award - $100 for the individual with the highest number of points in piano and vocal classes - a four- way tie - $25 each to Robyn Barker, Amanda Carew, Cheryl Koscik and Laura Scholl. The Stacey Brothers -Ault Foods award - $75 to the outstanding boy vocalist of the entire Festival - Jamie Baldwin. The Mitchell Advocate award - $100 to the outstanding girl vocalist of the entire Festival - tie between Erika Gross and Tina Demerling. The Festival Scholarship - $200 to the individual from the Mitchell area showing the promise in the entire Festival, to be used for tuition Robyn Barker.
