Pedalling for stroke awareness
The 50 ft long, 30 -seat Big Bike
Ride for Stroke will pedal along St.
Christopher's Beach in Goderich on
Sunday, May 28 to raise funds and
awareness for stroke, Canada's
most neglected disease.
Teams of 29 riders will
participate in the second annual Big
Bike Ride for Stroke on Sunday,
May 28 at the foot of West Street.
The Big Bike Ride for Stroke is a
pledge -based, community event
that's novel, wacky and encourages
team spirit. The Big Bike will be
touring across the province from
May to October.
The Foundation plans to raise
S700,000 from 500 riders across the
province to support stroke research
and health promotion programs.
The Huron Chapter is actively
seeking teams of 29 riders to ride
the Big Bike and anyone interested
in assembling a team is asked to
contact the chapter office in
Goderich at 524-4440 for further
information.
Last year's Big Bike Ride for
Stoke exceeded its goal of $4,350
raising over $6,000. This year's
goal is $8.350. "Three teams rode
the Big Bike in 1994," says Greg
Williams, vice-president of the
Huron Chapter. "We hope many
more organizations from across the
county will put a team together. It's
really a lot of fun and everybody
has a picnic afterward." A
driver is provided for safety and
steering purposes along the 3 km
route. Area Coordinator Steven
Smith said the event is not a race
but rather a fairly leisurely jaunt
along some of the most scenic
countryside in Ontario. "Anyone
who works out on a regular basis
would enjoy the Ride but an
advanced level of personal fitness is
certainly not necessary to ride the
Big Bike," Mr. Smith said.
A mimimum pledge of $50 is
required to ride the Big Bike and
riders can earn great prizes along
the way which arc awarded on site.
Each year, approximately 50,000
Canadians have a stroke. A third of
these victims are between the ages
of 35 and 65. In 1991, stroke
claimed the lives of more than
14,000 Canadians.
* Approximately a quarter of stroke
victims will die
Crime Stoppers
On March 15 or 16 thieves
removed four rally wheels and
tires from a vehicle sitting at
Hart Ford, near Seaforth. The
wheels and tires are worth
approximately $350.
On March 10 there was a
report of a car stolen from a
Farm at concession 9, Moms
Township. Near the residence
was a pick-up truck in the ditch
that had been stolen from
Godcrich. The victim's car was
found abandoned at the beach in
Goderich. It appeared the cul-
prits stole the pickup from town
and got stuck, then stole the car
to return to Godcrich.
If you have information about
these or any other crimes call
('rime Stoppers or Huron County
1-800-265-1777 and you could
receive a reward of up to
,000.

"The Big Bike Ride 'or Stroke
will go a long way in raising
awareness for this much neglected
disease," says Kittie MacGregor,
Huron Chapter presilent. "In
Ontario alone, more tian 5,000
people died as a result f stroke."
Statistics show that thecost of the
stroke is estimated to be S3 billion
per year.
Research funded by th( Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Ontario has
shown that many strokes can be
prevented if appropriae medical
treatment is followed arta attention
paid to modifiable risk factors such
as smoking. Almost all stroke
survivors recover to same extent.
Eighty per cent of stroke survivors
return home.
Under the leadership o£the Heart
and Stroke Foundation Ontario,
new therapies are c ntly in
development which shou prevent
many strokes; other' act reduce
the amount of brain damage
sustanined when stroke occurs.
Fundraising events like the Big
Bike Ride for Stroke are important
initiatives which help the
Foundation bring together the
public, health care professionals and
in the battle against

nursing is one approach. It works
well with both registered nuse and
R.P.N. working together through
ideas, care plans and patient care.
Working in a Physician's office is
an option for the R.P.N. as well as
industrial nursing. Community
nursing is another direction of
employment for the R.P.N. The
nuse works in the clients' home
independently with the R.N. acting
as a supervisor where necessary.
There are ongoing workshops and
courses for R.P.N. available to keep
the R.P.N. abreast and fresh within
the medical field. The opportunity
to sit upon committees and be an
active and important part of the
system is available to the R.P.N.
who finds buraucracy vital and
interesting.
Change is ongoing in this
essential field. The R.P.N. is a
respected element in the medical
field and will continue to be so
with promotion and public
awareness. Along with the many
available opportunities that this
career presents, there are the
benefits of meeting new people,
travelling, job sharing, and being
part of the every -changing medical
field.
Any question? Ask any of the
R.P.N.'s or the clients that they
have cared for!
