The Huron Expositor, 1995-04-12, Page 17Sports CENTS' AWARD WINNERS - The Seaforth entena res e Sunday afternoon. The Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D"evelopment League team's trophy winners for 1994-95 are, left to right: Kalen Carroll, best defenceman; Steve Geiger, sportsmanship and ability; Chad Ramer, most valuable player in playoffs; Steve Mclnally, scoring champ and rookie of the year; Terry Barton, most improved player; Jason Hayter, most valuable player. Cents and head coach say goodbye Head coach Maurice Guy and the Seaforth Centenaires amicably parted ways at the local Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D"evelopment League team's annual awards banquet Sunday afternoon. Guy, 24, said he had enjoyed the challenges of coaching in Seaforth the past four years but wants to return to ice as a player, which he "really misses". He was presented with a pen and pencil from the executive, as a token of their appreciation, and retiring general manager Gregor Campbell was likewise presented with a hockey sweater with his nickname on the back. Guy started with the Centenaires, fresh from a five-year playing career in junior B hockey, as an assistant coach under Bob Zimmer in 1991-92. He returned as an assistant to Jamie Petrie the following year, and replaced him a head coach with a dozen games left in that season. He was head coach the past two seasons guiding the Centenaires to a 36-36-7 record during the regular seasons and two series wins and an 8-8 record in the playoffs. MAURICE GUY back to the blades Only the head -coaching tandem of Geoff Ward and Tom Chesscll, also originally from Mitchell, have led the Centenaires to more wins in their 21 -year history, which they did between 1984-86. Steve McInally of Seaforth took ''home the iitost hardware after thJ" banquet at the Seaforth and District Community Centres, winning the awards for being the Cents' top scorer and rookie of the year. The Lome Carter Trophy for being the Centenaires most valuable player in the playoffs went to PUBIC INFORMATION MEETING "The REFORM Alternative For Ontario Government" TUES., APRIL 18 - 8:00 p.m. OMAF CONFERENCE ROOM 100 Don St., Clinton REF RM ookAto. v AND DISTRICT I` CO-OPERATIVE NURSERY SCHOOL i 1 REGISTRATION & OPEN HOUSE V^ MITCHELL WHEN: April 26, 1995 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. WHERE: Grace Lutheran Church 114 St. David St. Mitchell WHO: Children of ages 2 1/2 years to 5 years by September 5, 1995* for further information contact the registrar at '(20% of children admitted may be between the ages of 2 and 2 1/2 as of September 5, 1995.) 348-9824 veteran Chad Ramer of Zurich, and Steve Geiger, also a veteran from Zurich, won the Jack McLlwain Trophy for being the player who best combines sportsmanship with ability. Geiger, the Western Division's most valuable player in its all-star game, has signed a letter of intent to play with the junior B London Nationals next season. Last year's Cents' rookie of the year, Jason Hayter of Goderich, won the Ken Doig Trophy for being the team's most valuable player during the regular season. Most improved player honours went to rookie defenceman/forward Terry Barton of Stratford, and veteran Kalen Carroll of Seaforth won the trophy for being best defenceman. Minor hockey Annual meeting only "so so" The Seaforth and District Minor Hockey Association accepted the nominations of three new directors and the resignations of four others at its annual meeting Wednesday. The meeting at the Seaforth and District Community Centres was "not well attended" considering the 220 young hockey players who registered with the association in 1994-95, according to returning director Graham Nesbitt. That could also mean "we're doing something right", he added. No amendments to the constitution were recommended or changed. The new directors are Brian Wilson, Doug Leonhardt and Brian O'Reilly. Departing are last year's President Doug Ansteu, and directors Janice Leonhardt, Colin Young and Brian Macdonald. Returning directors are Mary Margaret Nash, Sharon Camochan, Charlie Akey, Murray Henderson, Karl Teichert and Nesbitt, giving the association a total of nine directors for the coming year. The various positions on the new executive will be determined at its next meeting May 10. The organization remains slightly in the red, according to Nesbitt, for various reasons which include the GST, rising insurance rates and increased registrations in recent years. The association now has second teams at novice, atom, peewee and bantam levels and an additional two junior teams in its Saturday morning House League, an increase of about 40 players compared to five years ago. The head coach of the local bantams, Dave Akey, was also given the nod as the Seaforth and District Minor Hockey Association's coach of the year. Earth Day coming soon April 22, 1995 marks the 25th Anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970 when a United States Senator Gaylord Nelson encouraged students to stage environmental awareness projects in their com- munities.
