'Let's explore'
4-H club meets
by JEREMY RYAN
The 4-H club `Let's Explore' got
together on Thursday, March 30 at
the Knights of Columbus Hall. The
leaders of this club, Diane Elston
and Joyce Dedecker told us to build
a house out of marshmallows and
toothpics. The way it worked was
one person had to build with their
right hand only and the other per-
son with their left hand only. It
showed us that we can work
together. After we finished our
house Diane talked about different
clubs we can belong to and the
different awards we can win. The
groups all got together and closed
the meeting by saying the 4-H
motto, `Learn to do by doing.'
Next meeting will be held in the
St. Columban Church hall on
Thursday, April 6 at 7 p.m.
People discuss •
future of land
owned by ABCA
More than 70 municipal, provin-
cial and interest group representa-
tives met with the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority (ABCA) on
March 30 to discuss the future of
the Authority's land holdings. The
Authority owns 8,500 acres of land.
With dwindling financial resources
the ABCA was seeking direction
for land ownship and management.
Divided into small groups for
discussions, the participants told the
conservation agency what they
value most about conservation lands
and how the Authority should
undertake to increase revenue, said
Kate Monk of the ABCA.
"They want us to manage conser-
vation lands for natural habitat for
wildlife. These lands are also
valued for recreation and educa-
tion," said Monk.
Those who attended supported the
concept of selling lands that do not
meet conservation objectives and
using the funds to manage the
remaining lands, according to an
ABCA press release. Donation
boxes should be placed at several
areas to increase revenue.
The discussions were part of the
ABCA's 1995 Partners Meeting.
Members municipalities, provincial
ministries and interest groups attend
each year to provide input on
aspects of the Authority's programs
and services.
