Plenty of upsets in House League finals
The Canadians and Ducks found
out the hard way that regular season
records often matter little when
playoffs and hockey championships
are on the line.
Despite earning 34 of a possible
40 points during the regular season
the Habs were thumped 6-2 by the
Kings, who won the Seaforth and
District Minor Hockey
Association's Junior House League
A Championship Wednesday night
at the arena.
Regular -season Saturday -morning
form didn't seem to matter much
for the first -place Ducks in the
Senior A final either, as the second -
place Panthers clawed past them,
despite finishing the season nine
points back of them in second
place, for a sip of victory pop and
a 5-3 win.
The third-place Whalers took the
Junior B title with a 5-2 victory
over the Oilers, and the cellar -
dwelling Leafs still ended their
season with a celebration and
Junior C honours, by virtue of a 7-1
upset over the fifth -place Sharks.
The Senior B final was a dilly of a
bambumer and the match of the
night. Regulation ended as a 2-2
standoff between the Bruins and
Blues. The game was still tied after
six minutes of overtime so it went
to a shootout, which the Bruins won
3-1 and hence the championship,
with Derek Nesbitt netting the goal
that won it and Chris Marion
adding the icing on the cake.
Mark Van Dooren led the
Panthers to the Senior A upset by
scoring a hat trick, brother Scoit
added another goal and Mark Vock
got the other. Jared Camochan with
two goals, and Gord Bjerg the
other, replied for the Ducks.
Marion and Nesbitt scored during
regulation time for the winning
Bruins in the Senior B game, with
Mike Murray bagging the two goals
for the Blues and Dan Nash scoring
in the shootout. The winning goalie
was Dan O'Reilly.
Brad Henderson lit the lamp four
times for the Kings to help them
crown the Canadiens in the Junior
A tilt, with Mike Delvecchio and
Ben Rapson adding singles. Josh
Holland replied with two goals for
the losers.
Tim McClure and Lucas Vick
both got two goals for the Whalers
in their Junior B win, with Tyler
Elligsen scoring the other, and Kyle
Devereaux and Matt Camochan
doing the scoring for the Oilers.
Cody McNaughton and Marsha
Denys • i .h scored twice for the
Leafs .n ! Junior C final. Jason
Denys, breitt O'Reilly and Darren
Beaver added singletons, with
David Austin replying for the
Sharks.
GOALTENDERS SPARKLE -
It was the most exiting game
of the evening when the Blues
and Bruins squared off in the
Senior B championship at last
Wednesday night's House
League hockey finals at the
arena.
Both goaltenders sparkled in
the game, that went into
overtime then into a shootout,
with the Bruins ending up on
top by a 3-2 score.
Cents' GM. packs it in
after five years. with team
The manager of the Seaforth
Centenaires has resigned.
"I:' will- miss the players but I
won't miss the politics," says
Gregor Campbell, who has
managed the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D"evelopment
League franchise in town for the
past five years.
Tonight (Wednesday) is the 21 -
year -old junior hockey club's
Annual Meeting.
Campbell says his enthusiasm
seriously waned this past season,
and the time he was devoting to the
hockey club hurt his photography
business, among other concerns.
Only John Simmons, among
active managers in the nine -team
Western Division, has been at the
helm longer. Simmons started with
Lambeth but now manages Mt.
Brydges.
The Centenaires hadn't won a
playoff game in four years and had
missed the playoffs for the three
years prior to Campbell being
appointed manager in 1990-91, a
span in which the Centenaires had
a .145 winning percentage by virtue
of a 12-88-7 won -loss -tie record.
In the his five years as manager
the Centenaires never finished the
regular season higher than fifth in
the nine -team division, but never
missed the playoffs, won three
playoff series and achieved a .423
winning percentage in 235 league
and post -season games. His teams'
record during the regular season
was 75-109(6)-15 and 14-22 during
the playoffs, and he worked with
three different head coaches in
those five campaigns.
Campbell says the personal
highlight of his tenure was

sweeping Exeter in the 1993-94
quarter -finals and the lowpoint was
losing to Lucan on a goal that was
disallowed in the sixth game of the
semi-finals two years previous.
"The goal should have stood and
I've still got it on tape if anybody
still wants to argue," he says.
The departing manager says the
one game he will remember for
sure until the day that he dies will
be the four -overtime game and the
"magnificent" play of goaltender
Dana Duskocy last spring when he
faced 92 shots in a 2-1 loss to the
Mitchell Hawks in what turned out
to be the final game of the Division
Final.
Campbell never played more than
house league or pond hockey. He
was on the executive of the senior
Seaforth Seahawks for two years
before joining the Centenaires, and
had coached in the local minor
hockey association's house league
since the early 1980s.
The Centenaires placed fifth with
an 18-18-3 record in the season just
past, but were swept by Lucan in
the first -nand of the playoffs.
