Seaforth gets Summer Active
BY TIM CUMMING
Expositor Editor
A special week organized to
promote fitness has been expanded
to an entire two months.
'Fitweek' has essentially become
'Fitsummer' with the new two-
month program called Sumner
Active '95.
Seaforth is one of six host com-
munities kr Summer Active '95,
which is organized by the Physical
Activity Community Action Group
for Huron County. (Seaforth Recre-
ation Director Marty Bedard is a
member of the organizing commit-
tee).
There will be traditional sporting
activities offered in Huron such as
baseball, swimming, volleyball and
lawn bowling. There will also be
such sports as Ju-jitsu, cricket,
water polo and lacrosse.
Organizers say people .who have
never tried different sports or activ-
ities will have an opportunity dur-
ing the summer fitness campaign.
"We're going to be having a
number of activities geared to all
members of society; said Sandy
Edelsward, coordinator of Summer
Active '95. "It's not just heavy-duty
sports, it's fun things."
Events will include nature walks
and walk-a-thons.
There will be a two-week kick-off
to the event from May 15-31. The
first day will be Sneaker Day, a
popular event which is a carry-over
from Fitweek. On Sneaker Day,
local residents can wear sneakers to
work so they're not afraid of physi-
cal activity such as walking home
from work.
The organizers of the event offer
some interesting statistics on the
health (or lack of health) of people
in Huron County:
•Twenty eight per cent of residents
are active less than once per week.
•Twenty-six per cent believe their
current level of physical activity
will lead to health problems.
•Students become less active as
they get older. In grade four and
grade seven 66 per cent of students
were active. In rade 10 only 43
per cent were active.
•Cardiovascular disease, which is
contributed to by physical inactiv-
ity, is the number one killer of
Huron County residents.
Fitweek was a program which has
run for more than a decade. In the
promotion of healthy activity it has
now been expanded to two months.
Local Summer Active '95 organizer
Marty Bedard says activities in the
Seaforth area will be concentrated
in the period from May 15 -June 2.
Events in the Seaforth area
include the Child Find walk-a-thon
on May 21, a kite making demon-
stration, Dance for Heart and a
possible ball clinic in the Central
Huron area.
"We're trying to offer as many
activities as possible," said Bedard.

Here's help
The need for prescription drugs shouldn't make anyone have to choose between
health and financial hardship. Starting on April 1, people with unmanageable
drug expenses can get help through the new Trillium Drug Program.
The chart below shows the annual out-of-pocket amount an individual or family
will have to pay for prescription drugs before they can apply. Once people are eligible,
the Ministry of Health will pay for approved prescription drugs.
The new Trillium Drug Program will mean a healthier, more secure future for
thousands of people struggling to pay for the prescription drugs they need.
If you'think you qualify, start saving your receipts for prescription drugs on April 1.
More information and an application kit are available from the Ministry of Health at
1-800-268-1154, Toronto 314-5518, TTY 1-800-387-5559, or from your local pharmacy.
