Bronze
The Seaforth Stingers Junior
'A' Ringette Team won the
bronze medal at the Ontario
Ringette Championships held in
Sudbury last week.
The Stingers, representing the
Western Region competed
against teams from other regions
from across the province.
The Stingers were 5-1 in the
win -loss columns in preliminary
round-robin play at Sudbury.
The Seaforth squad, led by the
stalwart goaltending of Jayne
Crowley, defeated Hamilton 7-4
in a rough, first game. Seaforth
then beat Port Perry 8-4. Port
Perry and Seaforth had met on
one other previous occasion
during the season and Port Perry
had soundly defeated Seaforth at
utat time. Seaforth simply
outskated and out played the
Port Perry team in this crucial
tournament game.
The Stingers later defeated
Sault St. Marie 9-2 but at a high
price. Cathy Coyne, defenceman,
incurred a knee injury and was
lost for the reminder of the
tournament.
The most important and
ultimately the best game of the
enure tournament had Seaforth
facing off against Pembroke in
the fourth game of the
tournament. The results of this
game would determine which
team would secure first place
and receive a bye into the cham-
pionship final. Seaforth had
defeated Pembroke, winning the
gold medal in an earlier
tournament this year in
Mariposa, and Pembroke was
obviously determined not to be
overtaken by the local squad in
this game. At the end of the first
half the game was scoreless and
the Seaforth team, although out-
playing and out -skating the
Pembroke team, particularly
during the first period was
frustrated countless times by
exceptional goaltending.
Pembroke ended up winning 4-2.
In fifth game of the
tournament the Stingers
clobbered Keewatin 9-2. The last
game of the round robin saw
Seaforth pound Valley East
(Sudbury) by a score of 13-2.
On the basis of the round robin
results, Seaforth placed second
and advanced to semifinal action
Friday evening against third-
place Port Perry.
Seaforth defeated Port Perry in
preliminary action and Port
Perry obviously was prepared to
take revenge. Port Perry jumped
into an early Lead, but the
Stingers responded with a goal
early in the first period to tie the
game. Port Perry responded with
two quick goals and although the
Stingers came within a goal on
numerous occasions, they were
unable to overtake the very
defensive minded Port Perry
team. The final score was Port
Perry 7 - Seaforth 5.
The Stingers achieved their
season goal of winning a medal
at the Championships and were
gracious recipients of the all -
Ontario Ringette Championships
Bronze medallion.
The Stingers had a very
successful season. They won
gold medals at three
tournaments, were Huron -Perth
League Champions and Western
Region Junior 'A' Champions.
The members of the team
would like to thank all those in
the community who assisted in
making the trip to Sudbury
possible, and would like to
extend their gratis to their
parents and loyal fans who have
supported them in their
endeavour this past season.
Poor turnout
causes
problems
The St. Columban Soccer
Association has temporarily
suspended operations for three
weeks because of the poor
turnout at its annual meeting
March 9.
Six people showed up, only
two fully committed to serving
on this year's executive.
The minor soccer organization,
which has a long history and
estimates 200 children have
registered in recent years, hopes
to have better success at a
second annual meeting now
scheduled for the St. Columban
Parish Hall on Mar. 30 at 7:30
p.m.
GREOOR CAMPBELL PHOrrC
