Baby airlifted from hospital in area BY GREGOR CAMPBELL Expositor Staff A tragedy was prevented during a recent air lift from Seaforth Community Hospital, providing the first practical application of the facility's new heliport. The Coordinator of the Pediatric and Neo -Natal Critical Care Transport Program of London's Children Hospital, Karen Fleming, calls the air lift a success and says Seaforth did a "fabulous job" stabilizing and managing the infant involved before the helicopter could get here. She says the local heliport, which officially opened late last fall, proved extremely useful and enabled a far quicker response time than if an ambulance had been used. The emergency happened here in the early evening here is Seaforth on Tuesday Feb. 14 and involved a newborn. London doctor Jonathan Kronick was in charge of the emergency. Two pilots, nurse Wendy Draisey and respiratory therapist Donna Foster were on Jays are league the helicopter that picked up baby in Seaforth during the emergency, and kept the infant on life support during the quick flight to London. Program coordinator Fleming says the Children's Hospital is connected to Victoria Hospital in that city, and the role of its critical care transport program was extended in 1992. Seven registered nurses and another seven respiratory therapists are all specially trained for exactly this type of emergency and currently comprise the group. The Pediatric and Neo -Natal Critical Care Transport Program covers a wide area, from Windsor to the Kitchener - Waterloo corridor, north and west to Sault Ste. Marie and by GEORGE LOVE The Jays won the league cham- pionship in the St. James Bowling League even though they lost by a 5-2 score to the Partridges on the last night of the regular schedule on Monday, March 13. Whelan blasts agricultural policy BY TIM CUMMING Expositor Editor OTTAWA - A one-time federal agriculture minister criticized his former Liberal colleagues for rewriting agricultural policy in the recent federal budget. "I'm very disappointed with what they did," said Whelan, who has traditionally been known as a friend of Prime Minister Jean Chrdtien. "I didn't know they were going to do all those things in the budget." Some of the changes in the budget were not in the 'Red Book' which formed the Liberals' election platform, he said. The popular former agriculture minister, who was speaking in Ottawa on Friday, predicted an economic crisis "like you never saw before." Whelan chastised the government of Jean Chrdtien for neglecting agricultural research. "For every dollar in research the smallest return would be $7," he said. He said too many Members of Parliament are new and don't know about agriculture. "By the time they learn it will be too late," he said. Whelan also said there is not enough stability at the top with Agriculture Ministers regularly moved from their postings and Deputy Ministers without agri- cultural experience. "We don't have people running agriculture who know anything about agriculture." Whelan, wearing his trademark green Stetson, defended the past successes of Canadian agricultural Seaforth man awarded travel opportunity Three members of the Huron County Junior Farmers were Travel Opportunity Winners at the March Conference of the Junior Farmers' Association of Ontario. Hank Nyman, of Seaforth, won an inter -provincial travel exchange to Manitoba. He is the son of Ben and Ann Nyman of Benmiller. The award was pres- ented at the gala Annual Banquet at the Citadel Inn Ballroom in Ottawa. Junior Farmers' Associ- ation of Ontario President Murray Shaw presented the award. Other Huron winners were Jennifer Schroter, who won a travel opportunity to Australia, and Melissa Logtenberg, of the Dungannon area. Huron County Junior Farmers members Fred Peel, of Londesboro and Tim Cumming, of Seaforth were nominated by their county for Rose Awards at the banquet. research including its experimental farms in Ottawa and the success of canola abroad. Whelan's harshest criticism came for supporters of a world trade -organization. He predicted that policy will be set in Geneva and nations will lose their autonomy. "Farmers will have no say in the marketplace." The erosion of supply manage- ment protection was a huge concern for the flamboyant ex -politician and well-known supporter of world aid ro s p "Americans want to rule the food world," he charged. The populist speaker had harsh words for money traders saying "they're betting on your life and your country's economy." Whelan expressed disapproval that Canada seemed to set aside human rights abuses in China in the inter- est of fostering trade. Prime Minis- ter Chrdtien was on the receiving end of one of Whelan's barbs, when the controversial former ape - net minister joked that "the Prime Minister of Canada discovered China." Whelan was speaking to the Annual March Conference of the Junior Farmers' Association of Ontario, at the Citadel Inn in Ottawa. There were four representatives from Huron County at the March Conference. They were Hank Nyman, of Seaforth; Tim Cumming, of Seaforth; Fred Peel, of Londesboro and John Mackintosh, an international agricultural exchange participant staying at the farm of Cor and Gerda Vanden Hoven near Seaforth.
