15,000
artifacts at
Ag Museum
At the Ontario Agricultural
Museum, farm history is as as-
tonishing as it is real. With its
collections of 15,000 artifacts --
some of which were donated by
individuals from Huron -Bruce coun-
ties -- we are presented with the
changes, the movements, the tech-
nology that has evolved on the farm
from settlement times to the present
day.
Located just south of the Highway
401 at Milton, the Museum's large
site, with its magnificent collection
of rare and historic barns,
farmsteads and equipment, is the
perfect seuing to depict our rural
heritage.
The Museum is divided into three
main sections. A series of
Farmsteads trace the evolution of
domestic and agricultural life on the
farm. At the 1830s pioneer
farmstead, visitors can get a first-
hand look at the daily life of subsis-
tence farming and self-reliance.
Plenty of long hours and labor-
intensive work kept new families
bound to their farms in hopes of
fulfilling their dreams of indepen-
dence and financial success. Some
decades later, the shift from subsis-
tence to market agriculture had
begun and the result is represented
in the 1860s farmstead.
The Crossroads Community
features theme bu'ldings which
represent services a ailable to the
Ontario rural community. Artisans,
such as the blacksmith and
wheelwright, are busy replicating
life during the 1910s to the 1930s
for visitors to experience the days
of a bygone era.
