It is the second time Murray Elliott, owner of Elleeta Farms, has had the distinction of receiving this award. The Coat was in 1976 when he operated a farm north of Hamil- ton. Elliott, who has been working with Holstein dairy cows since the mid 1950's, moved to his farm east of Walkerton in October 1984. The award is based on an ac- cumulation of pre -determined points in various categories. Cows are judged on their size, feet and legs, a visual rating of the mammary system and dairy character. Cows should have an angular appearance with sharp front ends and not too much meat, Elliott said. Ratings range from poor to excel- lent and points are awarded for 'very good' and 'excellent' cows. Only 18 breeders across Canada received the Master Breeders dis- tinction this year. "I breed for type quality whereas others may breed for only produc- tion reasons." Raised on a dairy farm, Elliott received a diploma in Animal Hus- bandry from the University of Guelph. Although at the time he wasn't sure he wanted to go back to fanning, Elliott was thrust back into it when his father suffered a back injury. He worked with his father until buying Elleeta Farms.
